----

Today (March 29th, 2026) we can start to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll and Henry Holiday's "The Hunting of the Snark". Carroll distributed first editions of his Snark tragicomedy to selected friends and family before the official publication date. Macmillan officially published the poem on April 1st, 1876, but Carroll prepared 80 presentation copies on March 29th, 1876, many of which he signed and gave away.

On occasion of the 150th anniversary of Carroll's long Snark poem and Holiday's Snark illustrations, I now provide you with a tool for which our snarked world has been waiting since the big bang (or even earlier). The tool checks assertions in a table of assertionsbased on the Bellman's rule: "What I tell you three times is true!". The function atLeastThrice yields all assertions which it can find at least three times in the assertions table.

The function uses a fact checking algorithm which also is used by the most powerful leaders of the world.

The function makes fact checking great again.
The function makes fact checking great again.
The function makes fact checking great again.

Here is my implementation of "What I tell you three times is true" in Haskell:

    atLeastThrice :: [String] -> [String]
    atLeastThrice assertions =
      [head grp | grp <-
group $ sort assertions, length grp >= 3]

ChatGPT's explanation of atLeastThrice: "Thank you for providing the implementation in Haskell. Yes, your implementation looks correct. The "group" function groups the same elements in the list together, then you are filtering out the groups that have less than three elements, and finally returning the head of each group (which is the repeated assertion)."

Mae Losasso (The Observer), I recommend this paper to you: Katherine Wakely-Mulroney, "The Man Who Loved Children: Carroll Studies’ Evidence Problem, Journal of the History of Sexuality", University of Texas Press, Vol. 30, № 3, pp. 335-362, 2021-09
«But I can’t help but feel a little disappointed about the ways the event sanitises not only the writing, but the history that troubles that “golden” afternoon of 1862: Carroll’s fetishistic relationship with Liddell and other prepubescent girls, who he photographed in provocative – and scantily clad – poses remains controversial; there’s little evidence that he did more than stage amateur photographs, but given that the Alice’s Day celebrations revolve around the fabled boat trip, doesn’t the possibility cast a queasy pall? Certainly, Carroll’s writing deserves to be celebrated in all its strangeness, but but perhaps Dodgson is best left in his dark corner of the Christ Church dining hall.»

Carroll Studies' Evidence Problem
Katherine Wakely-Mulroney
2021, Journal of the History of Sexuality

...

«Lewis Carroll studies treats investigations into the author’s sexuality as outmoded, even unscholarly. This is partly a response to the speculative biographical criticism and media coverage of the 1990s and early 2000s, which placed undue emphasis on his alleged pedophilia. In their efforts to provide a more nuanced, historically contextualized vision of Carroll’s child-friendships, modern critics have tended to either dismiss any allegation of impropriety or treat the subject as a perpetually open question. Both positions foreground the availability and interpretation of evidence, and raise questions concerning scholarly expertise and gatekeeping. This essay argues for a new understanding of what evidence concerning Carroll’s sexuality entails. I identify a shared organizational ethos between his two-part novel Sylvie and Bruno (1889-1893) and the journals composed during his annual summer holidays in Eastbourne. The diaries record Carroll's ongoing efforts to define the kinds of domestic intimacies that were possible between men and girls; the novel likewise explores the various relationships that could connect adults with children – familial, spiritual, romantic, and sexual. The volume of evidence contained in these sources, which amount to thousands of pages, has to be examined quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Carroll’s increasingly energetic and experimental attempts to structure and legitimise his desires through writing is itself a form of evidence, one that is cumulative and suggestive rather than singular and definitive. This evidence points to an erotic obsession with children that was unsettling even by the standards of his own time.»

To you, was the "Boots" a "maker of Bonnets and Hoods" when you read (or listened to) Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" as a child?
From Lewis Carroll's 'The Hunting of the Snark', pages 4 and 5.
In the image (source: https://archive.org/details/huntingofsnarkag00carrrich/page/4/mode/2up), lines 009 (https://snrk.de/snarkhunt/#009) and 010 (https://snrk.de/snarkhunt/#009) are highlighted.

009 The crew was complete: it included a Boots —
010 A maker of Bonnets and Hoods —
011 A Barrister, brought to arrange their disputes —
012 And a Broker, to value their goods.

013 A Billiard-marker, whose skill was immense,
014 Might perhaps have won more than his share —
015 But a Banker, engaged at enormous expense,
016 Had the whole of their cash in his care.

017 There was also a Beaver, that paced on the deck,
018 Or would sit making lace in the bow:
019 And had often (the Bellman said) saved them from wreck,
020 Though none of the sailors knew how.

By the way, a maker of bonnets and hoods isn't necessarily a hatter, because bonnets and hoods aren't necessarily hats.

In the image below you can see a ventilation hood behind a sail. The sail could be a bonnet (an extension to the lower edge of an existing sail), which is connected to the bowsprit which (as Snark readers know) got mixed with the rudder sometimes. Once the ship has been snarked in that manner, the helmsman (this office was usually undertaken by the Boots) used to stand by with tears in his eyes; he knew it was all wrong, but alas!

In the image you also see the Beaver making lace in the bow. The bowsprit and the bonnet are positioned behind the animal. It seems that sometimes the maker of bonnets had to ferociously plan a novel arrangement of bows.

It seems that since 1876 most readers of "The Hunting of the Snark" assume that the Snark hunting party consists of ten members. But in Michael Sporn‘s beautiful animated Snark film (1989), there are only nine Snark hunters, not ten. In Sporn’s film, the “Boots — a maker of Bonnets and Hoods” is boarding the Bellman’s vessel as a single person.

I learned about this from u/DrSousaphone on Reddit.

https://snrk.de/150th-snark-anniversaries/

There were three important 150th anniversaries of “The Hunting of the Snark”. Pan Macmillan (including Picador), the BBC and The Guardian missed all of them.

※ 18 July 2024: Conception
On 18 July 1874, the very last line of Carroll’s Snark tragicomedy came into his head while out on a walk at Guildford: “For the Snark was a Boojum, you see” .
The first stanza was composed on 22 July 1874. “In the midst of the word…” which stands as the last verse of the poem.

※ 25 October 2025: Naming
On 25 October 1875, Carroll decided to use “The Hunting of the Snark” as the title of his Snark tragicomedy (which in Henry Holiday’s view started out as a tragedy).

※ 1 April 2026: Birth
On 29 March 1876 at Macmillan, Carroll prepared 80 presentation copies for family and friends. (As far as I understand, these copies contained an additional poem: the Easter Greeting.)
On 1 April 1876, Macmillan officially published the poem with Henry Holiday’s illustrations.

The "maker of Bonnets and Hoods" isn't necessarily a hatter. He also could be someone who makes nautical equipment like bonnet sails and ventilation hoods. bsky.app/profile/snar...

BBC4 missed the 150th anniversary of “The Hunting of the Snark”. They once broadcasted a wonderful Snark radio drama, but seemingly are not interested to send it again.
