#Evol2026 I’m launching a new research group at UNC Charlotte in January 2027. Prospective students, postdocs, and collaborators are welcome to get in touch: jacob.berv@charlotte.edu More at jakeberv.com, lab website coming soon.
Announcement for a new Biodiversity Informatics Research Group at UNC Charlotte, launching January 2027. Dr. Jake Berv is launching a lab studying biodiversity across space and deep time, integrating phylogenomics, fossil and modern specimens, fieldwork, and comparative methods. A major near-term interest is developing and benchmarking human-guided AI research agents for rigorous, reproducible analyses in ecology and evolution. Prospective students, postdocs, and collaborators in macroevolution, computational biology and AI, natural history, and open science are welcome to get in touch at jacob.berv@charlotte.edu. More information: jakeberv.com. The graphic features McDowell Nature Preserve in Charlotte.

I’m here at #evol2026, as is a sizable chunk of Systematic Biology’s editorial board (academic.oup.com/sysbio/pages...). Early career folks: Please feel free to grab us to talk about publishing in the journal. We are here to help!

Looking for suggestions for outsourcing size selection on a Blue Pippin along with Illumina sequencing at a good price. I've previously used Novogene for sequencing, but they don't provide any size selection services.

Had a blast illustrating some slugs for the lab while I was away on break :-) From left to right: Blue-grey Taildropper (Prophysaon coeruleum) Carolina Mantleslug (Philomycus carolinianus) Red slug (Arion rufus) Banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus)

Preprint with postdoc @kerrycobb.bsky.social! When processes (e.g., ghost introgression) are omitted from training data, machine learning approaches are error-prone. Domain adaptation allows accurate inferences of introgression in the presence of unmodeled processes! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

New paper with @snaildit.bsky.social❗ You can use paralogs to reduce long-branch attraction! This will be especially helpful when there are no extant taxa that can be sampled to break up these branches. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

End of semester 'favorite animal' word cloud from my animal diversity class. Not strange at all how many of them love snails and slugs.
Word cloud showing favorite animals from an animal diversity class. 'dog', 'snail', and 'slug' are most popular.

New from @snaildit.bsky.social and me. We find that popular methods for detecting introgression between sister species (fastsimcoal2, dadi, BPP) all have high false positive rates in biologically realistic settings. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
