Okay, let me ask you, would you rather be hit by an e-bike speeding through a stop sign at 32 km/hr, or a car going through at 32 km/hr? What about a truck at 32 km/hr? What about a truck going 70 km/hr?

Excuse me? Did you even read what I wrote? I WALK to work everyday. You didn't even respond to what I said. I cycle, I walk, I drive, I bus. I do it all. Can cyclists break the law? Sure. So can pedestrians. The point of the article was that cars are more dangerous when they break the law.

That's not whataboutism. Not when the claim you're making is directly being refuted. Cars are more dangerous by far. I walk to work every day, I go biking with my 4 yr old. I've never felt in danger of a cyclist. I've nearly been hit by cars probably 15-20 times the last 3 yrs.

Absolutely, I have an e-cargo bike, it makes it easier to bike around the entire city with my 4-year old. We've visited so many parks together across the city. I could do it without an e-bike, as I used to, but I'd be wiped. It also just feels safer when you can consistently hit 32km/hr with cars.

Tired of mistreatment
All I wanted was to safely cycle to work and walk to the grocery store. Now I spend my days off advocating at city hall for a safe Wellington Crescent while being insulted by councillors.
Our roads are funded through property taxes, not through MPI insurance, nor do we have a system where road funding is tied to vehicle ownership. My inner-city neighbours and I are paying some of the highest taxes and in return we get derelict sidewalks, unsafe crosswalks and defunded transit.
While our city centre councillors are fighting an uphill battle against other councillors who believe money is better spent in their ward, I continue to feel like a second-class citizen. The roads in my inner-city ward seem to be meant to move people in cars to the suburbs at high speed. They don't keep me safe.

Supporters of the by-law are saying that submissions are still open for written statements. If you haven’t written in to express your opposition, you may still have time. It won’t hurt to send something, and given that efforts are being made to solicit support still, it’s essential to try.

Hey I’m just some guy, though. Let’s ask some experts
Protest bylaw goes too far
NEIL MCARTHUR, ARTHUR SCHAFER AND R.J. LEYLAND (sic)
FROM Minneapolis, to Tehran, to Bangla-desh, people are taking to the streets to protest against perceived injustices.
Peaceful protest is a critically important line of defence against the unjust actions of governments.
Incredibly, here in Winnipeg, some members of our city council want to put strict limits on that essential right.
The proposed safe access to vulnerable infrastructure bylaw, if passed, would be the most draconian law of its kind in Canada.Canadian courts treat protest not just as a form of expression, but one that is especially valuable. This is because it is essential to political participation and democratic accountability. Another is freedom of association. The Charter protects the right to gather physically for a shared peaceful and expressive purpose, as part of this right to associate freely.
In Canada, our Charter does allow governments to impose limits on our rights, but only when the limits are demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
Winnipeg's proposed bylaw clearly fails this test.
It fails because it works against the very ideals on which our free, democratic society is founded.
Neil McArthur, Arthur Schafer and R.J. Leyland (sic) are all professors in the department of philosophy at the University of Manitoba.

If you haven’t looked today, Buck’s map has been updated to include more of the categories of “vulnerable infrastructure” specified in the by-law, like dentists’ offices and pharmacies. No, I’m not kidding.

100% Imagine if we frontpaged every time people were almost hit at a crosswalk, every time a vehicle sped through a red light nearly hitting pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, or let alone all the times people HAVE been hit. Like the EA at St. George School doing the walking school bus.

Keeping property tax increases low while piling on per-household fees is regressive taxation to keep taxes low for the people with the most ability to pay.
On April 1, additional city fee hikes took effect, raising concerns about
affordability. On that day, the annual per-home garbage fee rose to $254 for 2025 (prorated to $190.50) from $93, while the typical home's sewer rate increased by $18.67 per month, or $168.03 for the rest of the year.
