SAME. I also recently saw this sadly relevant meme shared by @danknauss.wtf which made me think of this podcast by @edzitron.com: www.iheart.com/podcast/1119...
Elephant labeled "The entire world's IT infrastructure" stands on a beach ball labeled "Open source software" supported by ants labeled "Unpaid open source devs.

Never not relevant:
An xkcd cartoon shows a complex stack labeled "All modern digital infrastructure" resting on a small piece labeled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003.

In the latest podcast we talk silver linings after setbacks. Then veered into public speaking tips, survivorship bias, and pattern recognition. It's wide-ranging but with some great practical nuggets... have a listen (or watch) and let us know what you think. founderproblems.com/ep8-finding-...

Look at this beauty. New glass and aluminum Aeropress just arrived. I love my Aeropress Go but happy I get to start using this everyday and cut back on the daily dose of microplastics.

It is done. Finally. Haven't used Xitter since Musk completed his takeover, but finally got around to export/deletion of the account while locking username. See @mor10.com post on process if you need help: mor10.com/how-to-delet...

Latest podcast episode dropped last week: on Rented vs. Owned Platforms, which is a frequent conversation topic here. I wrote about this a month or two ago in one of my newsletters, but if you prefer audio, check it out at founderproblems.com (it will be the last one with mediocre sound).
A graphic promoting Founder Problems podcast Episdoe 7: Rented vs. Owned Platforms: In this episode we discuss rented versus owned digital Internet platforms, because social media accounts are great until they pull the rug out from under you. A cute little dumpster fire is in the corner, his single tear betraying the overwhelm behind the holding-it-together smile, because business is hard and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

Book quote of the day…
"Social psychologists call this inability to rest "idleness aversion," which makes it sound like just another minor behavioral foible; but in his famous theory of the "Protestant work ethic," the German sociologist Max Weber argued that it was one of the core ingredients of the modern soul. It first emerged, according to Weber's account, among Calvinist Christians in northern Europe, who believed in the doctrine of predestination that every human, since before they were born, had been preselected to be a member of the elect, and therefore entitled to spend eternity in heaven with God after death, or else as one of the damned, and thus guaranteed to spend it in hell. Early capitalism got much of its energy, Weber argued, from Calvinist merchants and tradesmen who felt that relentless hard work was one of the best ways to prove to others, but also to themselves-that they belonged to the former category rather than the latter.

Their commitment to frugal living supplied the other half of Weber's theory of capitalism: when people spend their days generating vast amounts of wealth through hard work but also feel obliged not to fritter it away on luxuries, the inevitable result is large accumulations of capital." (Oliver Burkeman, Four Thousand Weeks)

The struggle is real. #webdev #WordPress
Meme of the PTSD war dog with giant terrified eyeballs. Fading into the background are helicopters preparing an assault, soldiers marching into the jungle, steeling themselves for the inevitable horrors and memory of all the horrors that came before. The caption reads: "Logging into an unmaintained WordPress website."

Jan. 1 we launched Founder Problems #podcast. I did brand design (logo incomplete), sound design/editing/publishing over 2 months, then built the website in 2 days. It's been wild. I'm fairly happy with Episode 2, on how we approach the new year. Check it out (only 28 min): founderproblems.com
A graphic promoting Founder Problems podcast Episode 2: Three Approaches to Annual Planning: Tarot Cards, B.L.U.F.F., and the Pen-to-Spreadsheet Pipeline. Description: In this episode, Lee Zuvanich, Zach Oshinbanjo, and Sarah Schumacher tackle the once in a year task of planning the next one. From Pinterest-level vision boards to X-men and mortar inspired operational plans, we cover three wildly different planning styles that all end up being mostly the same (hint: start with values). Yes, the ubiquitous rocks and pebble illustration is mentioned, but only once. A cute little dumpster fire is in the corner, his single tear betraying the overwhelm behind the holding-it-together smile, because business is hard and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

Wow. I love it when I have to update Creative Cloud, then open a file that hasn't been touched, only to find the text has just randomly shifted. On a logo. A typographic style logo, which means the entire thing is jacked and now I have to completely redo it.
A side by side image showing the letters F and P in a brush front on a zoomed-in screenshot of part of a typographic style logo. On the left, before CC update and the correct letter sizing. On the right, after CC update and the letters are wildly different sizes and overlapping incorrectly.

On LinkedIn a screenshot was shared of a text thread where Larry Ellison commits $1-2B to fund Musk's purchase of Twitter. The idea was the worth of your network, but many of us are rightly pointing out what a horrible investment that was. So I had to make a meme of the best Southpark clip...
A memeified clip from Southpark: a clueless smiling gnome stands in front of a large whiteboard sign that reads Phase 1: Buy Twitter. Phase 2: question mark. Phase 3: Profit.

One of my secret tech weapons is a tool called #TextExpander. Create a snippet with a specific text shortcut, and type two letters to expand into 20 (or more). I never type my own name or email, for example. You can do way more than that. It saved me 10 hours in 2024 (which seems low).
TextExpander 2024 year in review showing 10 hours saved, 26 snippets created, and 2,791 snippets expanded.

This is one of the worst cold emails I've ever received. I guess we're going for the Cringe Olympics now. Sales people, don't do this.

I had forgotten that Blair Enns new book, The Four Conversations, was dropping December 2, so the delivery was a pleasant surprise. This book is so gorgeous it's almost distracting – just look at this palette and cover page... Excited for more hard-won insights on selling expertise. #booksky #books

My kid is playing this game on Switch called Stray. You’re a cat exploring this dystopian city, and it’s giving me serious child-appropriate Half-Life as-a-cat vibes and I’m loving it. So is our real-life kitten, who keeps trying to attack the TV.

Information overload isn’t new… #books
A photo titled Information Overload that shows a quote attributed to Barnaby Rich in the year 1600 (quoted in The Age of Reason Begins, 1961). It says “One of the great diseases of this age is the multitude of books that doth so overcharge the world that it is not able to digest the abundance of idle matter that is every day hatched and brought into the world." The word “books” has been scratched out and replaced with the word “tweets.”

Scam Alert: there's a cold email going around from a so-called "James Martin" at "Bose" that seems to be targeting marketing agencies. This is fake, but the scammers put in the work to make it look real, so you might do a double take on this one. Stay safe and delete this nonsense.
