if you haven't done trail work before - I strongly recommend it!!! the forest park conservancy is responsible for our trails being beautiful around Portland. All it takes is a single outing on unmaintained trails to viscerally feel how much is lost when trail work falls to the wayside

This is futurelock! - There is a future which needs to be polled to finish picking up a lock (it was granted a permit) - But no one is polling it, so progress cannot be made - and any other task waiting for this stuck future to complete will wait forever

hit a similar issue a few times, when I asked: - Please write a regression test first, check that it fails - Then write the fix Where claude will write an insufficient test, see that it passes, and move on happily. Such a straightforward mistake, but pretty bad if uncaught!

As someone who drives in SE PDX more than I bike, my goals are, in-order: 1. Don't murder anyone 2. Get where I'm going Making streets safer for cyclists helps me (and other drivers) do (1) without impeding (2). Bring back the planters!

Holman lane is one of my favorite hills in forest park. Yesterday I organized a little group run to go up and down it all day long. We raised a few hundred dollars for forest park conservancy! Perhaps I need to rally the runners for more hills repeat events soon 👀

> “Our fiscal system only works with immense growth,” says Mike Wilkerson, director of economic research at Portland-based ECOnorthwest. “That’s our economic strategy.” Not wrong, and choosing to ignore this will imperil way too many public services that we can't afford to lose.

people will use this as a pretense to fearmonger even though an average of 429 children are injured by manually operated vehicles every single day Waymo should absolutely be expected to analyze and prevent similar situations going forward, but human drivers are so dangerous

Sean Klein @smklein.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
we should tax Waymo for presence in portland, and have outsized penalties for them for unsafe driving, resulting in compensation to the city/citizens. This could fund public transit options (trimet) I don't understand the pdx approach to ban technology, rather than force it to become a net good

This is a "Jane Jacob's" classic take, which would be one of the most significant ways to improve Portland. It's slightly counter-intuitive from a left political perspective, but this area (zoning) is one where I firmly believe reducing bureaucracy, mandates, & laws would be a game-changer

the recent AI discourse has me feeling things, so it's still worth stating for the record: - AI as a "self-justified product" for end-users is usually shit - AI for tooling does not release you from responsibility of what is produced - You can (and should) still do things by hand, whenever you want

in college I took courses on machine learning. As a part of that, we built simple neural networks - from scratch - which could generate text, make classifications, etc. If you really hate AI, consider what the breaking point might be here. Do you truly hate the technology, or the way it's applied?

It's possible to be skeptical and concerned about AI companies (disinformation, neurosis, lack of critical thinking, job security, plagiarism) while also acknowledging usage patterns of the public. quote responses to this reinforce how correct @davidcrespo.bsky.social is about "bubble opinion"

This is the eternal question of a software developer: Am I failing to understand this because it's too clever? Or because it's too dumb?

I read the proposal. This is NOT a fee on arbitrary property owners/businesses that might have protestors. It IS a fee on detention centers that deploy chemical deterrents onto public spaces. So, in case there any confusion: it's hard to see how this would be bad for 99.99% of businesses

So, many thoughts: 1. This seems like an obviously bad idea 2. Can we have a discussion about whether or not the PCEF funding structure is actually working? Both in terms of "what it set out to do", but also, how is it possible for this fund to be such a constant raiding target?

Funny how thousands upon thousands of people can march through war torn Portland with absolutely no violence but some how anyone getting near a federal agent gets shot in the face.

Just in case this isn't clear to anyone: - the president declared war on Portland, and wants the national guard to use full force against the "hellfire" of citizens here - our city council used to have a group chat And Willamette Week is more concerned about that second bullet point

Sean Klein @smklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2025
it feels extremely jarring to try to focus on anything else while the federal government declares war on the city I live in, using rhetoric showing they're clearly hungry to murder civilians this moment feels like a calm before a (preventable, unnecessary, trump-instigated, amoral) shitstorm

Trump’s deployment of troops to Portland is a dangerous escalation of authoritarianism. Now is the time to find our own ways of standing up and fighting back to preserve our democracy. Fellow vets: we need you to muster. And those serving: you can refuse an unlawful order as you may receive it.

I run by south waterfront in PDX at least once a week. People have been peacefully, persistently protesting in front of the ICE building for many months now. Nothing "new" justified any federal action - they're clearly looking for a fight. Hoping Portland can go where agents are not. (1/3)
