My point is that trying create the job market we want rather than live with the job market we have is a good thing to do, and efforts to make workplaces more welcoming for women to to close the gender pay gap are examples of that.

It seems similarly shaped to “nut up and take the lower pay”, which is obviously not the right way to think about the labour market.

Working from home has been a game changer for school-age parenting. Kids can largely mind themselves for a few hours at this age, but you need to be in the same building.

It saddens me that pronatalist stuff is so right-coded, there’s heaps of left-aligned policies that would be great. People aren’t having children because raising children is tough. Make it less tough!

There’s a legit possibility that Trump does something to retreat from his mess if he can; he’s never been one to hold fast. But it also might turn out that it’s not possible to do that. I think the govt is hoping it will come right before the have to share scary plans. Weak.

A massive gap is the ability to communicate hard truths publicly. I expect that some people know what’s going on behind closed doors, although I expect Luxon himself is washing around in a tub of conflicting experts’ viewpoints. Tough calls will be diluted and delayed.

Watching Pluribus and seeing the protagonist say “I’m a very independent person” as she asked for a supermarket to be reassembled for her sole use made me rant at my wife for several minutes about how full-of-crap the character is. (I love my wife, she accepts me as I am 😝)

Yeah I can’t remember the specific reference but “language evolved for persuading people, not for communication” is a meme I’ve been implanted with, and seems very similar. “The Red Queen” by Matt Ridley had a lot on the topic.

I like the the theory that it’s like a peacock’s tail - sexually selected rather that naturally selected, advantageous only because the next generation will prefer it too. Hence the amount of mental energy dedicated to getting laid.

Open access to the internet, open access to your valuable stuff, and easily adding new skills from open repositories is a dangerous combo and a big part of the appeal. That said, there are inconveniences you can trade for more security that will make sense to people. I doubt it’s one-size-fits-all

I’ve done 0.4/0.5 (it just comes out as a single line in either case) and it’s a bit fragile but okay if you have a thicker frame around it.

the actual reason to run it when you're using an llm is that it throws so many compile-time errors that it is very difficult to write bad code in it

This post reminded me of being 8 years old, reconfiguring our IBM PS/2 Model 30 every few weeks, to the confusion and frustration of my parents, trying to work out what you could program with DOS batch files.

This is the best product review I’ve read: samhenri.gold/blog/2026031... It doesn’t matter if you’re interested in the MacBook Neo or not; this is the kind of essay that makes you think about the potential of technology and the joys of exploration.

It’s more reasonable to say “grok is a CSAM generator” IMO, given the competing absence of effort they have put into preventing it.

Yeah it’s the only way I’ve found it to work well - it can write the tests too, of course. Getting tests that don’t make me nauseous to read took a lot of nudging. I found that it took a fair bit of tinkering to get working well for me, and then it really flies.

Sam Minnée @sminn.ee · 13/03/2026
Is it correcting those bugs in order to get tests to pass, though? A test-based feedback loop is essential for getting anything good out of it.

Given that there’s several companies that all offer pretty good options, it seems more likely that costs will stabilise at some sustainable non-extractive profit margin, à la cloud hosting. My bigger concern is whether the max accounts are huge loss-makers atm, given the token subsidies.

Sam Minnée @sminn.ee · 13/03/2026
A context file of some kind up-front would probably do it; not sure how explicit you would have to be. (Ie just “follow the patterns of XYZ” or list examples and specific do/don’t guides). It tends to go for the mean by default, which… is not great. 😬

But an agent run might take 15 minutes and I don’t want to just wait for that.
000
Sam Minnée @sminn.ee · 12/03/2026
I have found doing “planning mode” for a number of tasks can work, it narrows the context to a horizontal slice rather than a vertical slice, if that makes sense. So I have a flow where the finished plans are saved to linear. I’m experimenting a lot with different workflows and where I put my attn.
100
Sam Minnée @sminn.ee · 12/03/2026
That’s a very good question, and I do ask myself that. Some days it’s astounding how much faster it is, but not all the time. I think there is an extent to which “the context” becomes all tasks, and so it works best if the tasks are either closely related to very simple.
000
Sam Minnée @sminn.ee · 12/03/2026
I’ll often queue up 5 or 6 agents to start a plan each, in separate worktrees. Then review the plans sequentially. Get stuck into one and queue up a 1 or 2 more follow up plans on parallel agents in the same worktree, etc… So while I might have 8 agents, many will be waiting.
