So I just read Aristophanes /The Clouds/ and it was a banger, but I really struggle to think how its .. useful perspective could be used in today’s media environment

I once read a comment saying something like "if you choose not to laugh at farts, your life will contain less laughter but still the same amount of farts". I think about that a lot.

I'm muting this because there are only so many hundred times a guy can bear having the words "What in the ACTUAL fuck" in his mentions but I will note the original CTV article is fairly scant on details, this French interview has more details: www.noovo.info/video/je-me-... here's a rough summary:
Rough summary of the French clip:
    • He was fishing on the Canadian side of the border, he's fished this lake for 40 years
    • The USCG ship pulls up and says "turn off your engine", he complies.
    • USCG says "you're on the American side", they start getting aggressive, yelling orders, talking about how they're going to impound his boat.
    • He says he knows this lake and he's not on the US side but, hey, if you guys want to interrogate me, we can do it back on shore, not out here in the open water
    • The USCG ship blocks his path back to the north, and begin pushing him backwards southward, toward the US side. The man believes they were trying to push him to the border so they could justify the arrest.
    • It seems he tries to get around their boat to go back north. At some point their boats collide and the much larger USCG boat capsizes his fishing boat. He says he nearly drowned. As he was in the water, the USCG was more concerned with tying his boat to theirs than trying to rescue him.
    • They detained him, took him to the American side, fingerprinted him, didn’t give him a phone call.

A reminder to any who think they aren't affected by any of these "porn bans" need to read up on history. Purges of purity like this led to the Comics Code Authority, and the demonization of Horror as a genre across all mediums. "Smut" to the fascist is a pretty wide net for anything they dislike.

The Ugly Laws, a series of state laws at the turn of the 20th century, banned disabled, mentally ill and unhoused people from public places. This + other eugenic law like forced sterilization and interracial marriage bans were such comprehensive body of legislation the Nazis studied and cited them.

A viewer sent me an email, asking me to look over a schematic for an autofire circuit that he had a generative AI create for him. This is the circuit he sent me. It doesn’t make any sense. I sent him a circuit that works from an old magazine I used before. Don’t fricking trust AI with anything.
An AI generated circuit for a classic 555 timer IC based autofire. Many components miss connections, nearly everything is mislabeled, there’s a transistor that doesn’t make any sense and many more things that render this utterly useless.
It looks plausible at the surface if you don’t know how to read schematics but it won’t work at all (you would even have trouble building it in the first place).

If you say that America is poised to institutionalize a police state - that the reality of concentration camps and regularized disappearances will become an ongoing facet of life - you'll still receive eye-rolls and clucked tongues. But that is not a possibility of this budget, it is the purpose.

Fascists talk about feminism to destroy trans people. They talk about equality to destroy diversity. They talk about fairness to destroy justice. Stop extending to fascists any benefit of the doubt, and withdraw it from any who insist on extending it. They are just two arms of the same beast.

As usual, @juliusgoat.bsky.social nails the discourse to a wall www.the-reframe.com/winning-the-...
And let's name the rarely mentioned "progressive purity test" that we're supposed to pragmatically abandon in the name of solidarity: The demand of this purity test is that we not compromise on universal human dignity and equality under the law. I suppose you could say that insisting on the rights of all people, including all trans people, is issuing a "political purity test." But why would you do so, while also ignoring the fact that those who refuse to enter the tent unless you push trans people out of the tent are also issuing a political purity test?

To me it seems what these "win the center" types are objecting to is not purity tests per se, but rather a negotiation over which purity tests we ought to prioritize over others, and who we ought to mean when we say "we."

I feel like I'm losing my mind. Here is the transcript of what Zohran Mamdani actually said about the phrase "globalize the intifada." This is his "refusal to disavow it." This is what has people terrified. Just fucking read it. Source: podscripts.co/podcasts/the...
Q: So I wonder what you think about that, about the phrase “globalize the intifada” and what we've seen as some anti-semitism coming from the left-wing protesters.

A: The first thing as you were saying is anti-semitism is a real issue in our city and it's one that can be captured in statistics, the ones that you're citing. It's also one that you will feel in conversations you have with Jewish New Yorkers across the city. And I remember one conversation I had with a friend of mine after the horrific war crime of October 7th. He was telling me that he went for Shabbat services at his temple and he was facing forward when he heard the door open. And he turned back with a chill going up his spine because he didn't know who was coming in. And that's more than a year ago.

And then just a few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a Jewish man in Williamsburg who told me that the same door he would keep unlocked for decades is one that he now locks out of a fear of what could happen in his own neighborhood. And I think that this is something that has to be the focus of the next mayoral administration, is not just talking about it, but tackling it. And these are the conversations that have informed our commitment around increasing funding for anti-hate crime programming by 800% in our Department of Community Safety.

To the question of language that's being used. I am someone who I would say am less comfortable with the idea of banning the use of certain words and that I think it is more evocative of a Trump style approach to how to lead a country. And-
Q: Does that just make you uncomfortable? Like the phrase globalizing intifada. And like the phrase from the river to the sea, does that make you uncomfortable? Or do you think-

A: Okay, those are different. Those are super different.

Q: They're not really.

A: Those are like different genres.

Q: I'm sorry, I'm asking so wrong. Then they're not really different to me. And to some people they are not different.

A: I know people for whom those things mean very different things. And to me, ultimately, what I hear in so many is a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights. And I think what's difficult also is that the very word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw ghetto uprising into Arabic because it's a word that means struggle. And as a Muslim man who grew up post-911, I'm all too familiar in the way in which Arabic words can be twisted, can be distorted, can be used to justify any kind of meaning. And I think that's where it leaves me with a sense that what we need to do is focus on keeping Jewish New Yorkers safe. And the question of the permissibility of language is something that I haven't ventured.
