Vinyl listening bars should play live baseball radio broadcasts during the playoffs, since "obscure records with cocktail accompaniment" and "baseball on the radio" have essentially identical fanbases

The kicker is *chef's kiss*
“You think we’re getting a little too close to Meta?” [John Georges, co-owner of Georges Media Group, the state’s largest media organization and parent company of the state’s largest newspaper, The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate], asked. “I’m not afraid of the sun. You know — Icarus? I’ll get as close to the sun as I can.”

Also, I don’t think you can have a serious discussion of rural white working class music without including metal which, to vastly simplify things, is what you listen to if your boss listens to country.

Obsessed with this AI cartoon that manages to incorporate two nostalgic fallacies in one speech bubble * We didn't worry about [disease] back in the day (because we took basic steps to prevent it) * We didn't care about [X] back in the day (because our moms took care of it for us)
AI illustration of a child's wound being treated with antiseptic reading "Mom didn't care if a cut was infected. She just poured a neon red liquid on it that burned like literal hellfire. If you could survive the medicine, the injury was nothing."

The mixed metaphors here are fascinating in terms of how we describe work versus how we actually do it. Nothing against Coinbase employees, but they do not “get their hands dirty,” nor are they athletes or coaches.
WSJ article: Intel Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner said last week that the chip maker had shrunk its layers of management by half, from 12 to six. The company
"pulled a lot of middle management out, which bogged down a lot of the decision-making," he said.
In May, Coinbase announced layoffs with the aim of having no more than five management levels below its leadership team.
"Managers should be like player-coaches, getting their hands dirty alongside their teams," CEO Brian Armstrong wrote in a staff memo.

I think a lot of the NYC bodega, etc., discourse comes from the fact that NYC is one of the few places in the US where lots of infrastructure and commerce is still thoughtfully designed for specific local needs, instead of being a lazy adaptation of suburban infrastructure or tourist-centric

I randomly opened a 1950s Army magazine at the library and there was an article reminding officers to think about what to do if their soldiers were fatally irradiated by a nuclear bomb but not yet symptomatic
know that a certain amoun
zens of exposure to radiation may or may nor prow Iness for a few hours. The victim apparently recovers only to die several weeks later after another short but sudden period of illness.
The living doomed
Let's say you are the division commander in this
hypothetical situation.
The enemy has fired a nuclear
strike against elements of your division. Corrective action has been taken to restore the situation. Normal blast, nuclear and burn casualties are being treated or evacuated. One of your commanders reports that his film badge and those of about 250 other members of his attle group show exposure to the x roentgens we men-ioned. This means that these men represent a group of soldiers who are able-bodied at the moment, and who will be for 15 to 20 days more. But after 20 to 25 days they will all be dead. Let's call on that old service school requirement: What are your actions and orders at this time?
Will you evacuate these troops as casualties even though they are now physically unimpaired and are able to walk?
Will you make special arrangements for their speedy evacuation to the zone of the interior so that they may spend their last days with loved ones?
If evacuation to the ZI is not practicable, or not desired by the doomed troops, will you send them to
days?
leave centers so they can live it up for their remaining
If, in your opinion, your situation was so tenuous that it required the application of every possible combat means, would you be justified in requiring these men to continue serving in their parent units? Or would you organize a kamikaze or banzai type of unit from among the doomed, for executing especially hazardous missions?
