#earlymodern #17thC Herbert and Sibbes on Substack! Mainly a bit about Sibbes this time - the influence of his sermons on Herbert next week. There's no evidence for it whatsoever, but my goodness I would dearly love for those two to have been friends! lovebademewelcome.substack.com/p/george-her...

#earlymodern #17thC "Were Henry Fairfax and George Herbert friends?" was the question that launched my HF project! Substack post here- lovebademewelcome.substack.com/p/were-henry... and a link in the post to my article on the fascinating story of Fairfax's first parish through most of the 17th C.

#earlymodern #17thC Traherne people - what books should I get while I wait (and save my pennies) for at least some of the Oxford Traherne project volumes? I have Julia Smith's "Select Meditations", the Angelico Press edition of the Centuries, & Inge's Happiness & Holiness. What else ought I to have?

#earlymodern #17thC New Substack! The last in my series on George Herbert & the ecclesial situation of his time. It's on his friends, family, & patronage networks - from an Arminian icon (Andrewes) to a Puritan iconoclast (Sir Robert Harley). lovebademewelcome.substack.com/p/herberts-f...

Welcome to the last in what has turned out to be a rather long series of posts situating Herbert in relation to the ecclesial spectrum of his time.

#earlymodern #17thC Over on the other platform there's quite a kerfuffle about the 16th/17th C English church & current Anglican identity. My Substack series on Herbert in his ecclesial context continues - from which anyone can also infer where I stand in the debates ;) substack.com/home/post/p-...

#earlymodern #17thC Outstanding new book alert!! It's John L. Thompson and Albert Gootjes' superb translation / bilingual critical edition of two key poems by the remarkable and utterly brilliant Anna Maria van Schurman, with a terrific introduction to her life / work / context.

#EarlyModern #17thC I'd be glad of some help with how assessments for these 3 levies were calculated. I'm researching a clergyman who paid £5 for the 1620 clergy Palatinate 'loan', over £6 in 1639 for the Scottish war (these seem rather steep!) and £1 6s 8d p/a (1634-36) for the repair of St Paul’s.

Current reading: intense theology (Davenant), detailed history (the Temples), George Herbert (sabbatical project), Thomas Goodwin (devotional), and a novel (Rose Tremain's Restoration). Common denominator? The 17th century, of course!! Guess who is absolutely *loving* being on sabbatical?!?! 😀❤️
