Monitoring these weapons during any stage of their lifecycle seems an overwhelming task. Discussions during our ancillary meeting highlighted the importance of information sharing amongst security agencies, particularly between customs, forensics, military, and law enforcement.

It was insightful to hear about the latest trends from the expert group and to be reminded that in a world of tech, simple equipment still matters.

Of grenades seized in 2023–24 that could be identified by model, only about 11% were Western designs; 78% of identifiable rocket launchers were legacy Soviet models. Most illicit weapons come from abandoned stockpiles, caches and battlefield scavenging.

One key finding highlights that the trafficking problem is not the one most people expect. Over the first two and a half years of the full-scale invasion, we found no evidence of systematic diversion of recently supplied Western weapons.
