This killed me
They told one mother, who’d tried to create an emergency plan in case she was detained, that she’d filed the wrong paperwork in court and accidentally given up her parental rights. They told another mother from Mexico, whose ex-wife had cut off contact as soon as she was deported, that the best she could hope for was one or two weeks of court-ordered visitations a year. And they told a mother from Haiti—who was so scared of being deported that she preemptively moved to Mexico—that she may never see her child again; the estranged father had agreed to care for their 3-year-old temporarily, but then blocked the mother’s phone number as soon as she arrived in Mexico. “We had to explain to her, ‘There’s nothing we can do. You have no viable pathway to regain any kind of contact with your child,’ ” Cartagena told me. “It was horrific.”

This saga has been ongoing for about a decade. Amid a housing shortage, it raises thorny questions about the laws meant to protect tenants from displacement and harassment, especially given officials' efforts to spur new development.
“For years, laws and policies have aimed to prevent the type of harms inflicted by urban renewal,” said Howard Slatkin, executive director of the nonprofit Citizens Housing and Planning Council, referring to a much-criticized model of clearing neighborhoods for redevelopment. “But despite our housing crisis, there really hasn’t yet been a reexamination of how we should balance the equitable treatment of existing tenancies with the need for more housing.”

Samantha Maldonado @smaldo.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
The state is reviewing an application to allow the developer to not renew those stabilized leases. It's been taking years. Offering buyouts is another way to get tenants to agree to leave so construction can proceed. In the past, here's how he paid out one of them:
Court documents show one of the tenants received a condo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, renovated and furnished to exacting specifications — including changing out gray granite for beige and decorating the living room with an animal-skin rug. Heletz purchased the apartment for $140,000, per property records, and agreed to pay all expenses related to it, including taxes, cable and utilities, for the rest of the tenant’s life or until he moved out. Heletz also paid off $6,000 of the tenant’s credit card bills and bought him an iPhone and a gold Mercedes-Benz Smart Car convertible, court papers show.
