The takeaway: Missouri voters have become more opposed to data centers overall, but where the project is located matters. 🏡 Our experiment suggests some voters who don’t want one nearby may be more willing to accept one in the state of Missouri.

SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Opposition to a local data center cuts across both party and place. 🏗️ It included majorities of Democrats (79%), independents (67%) and Republicans (56%), as well as rural (77%), suburban (71%) and urban (57%) voters.
110
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
That pattern is consistent with a “not in my backyard” effect. 🏡 Once voters had considered, and largely opposed, a data center in their own community, they became somewhat more accepting of one in the state of Missouri.
110
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Where voters pictured the data center mattered. 🏗️ Opposition to a data center in the state of Missouri was 66% when asked first, but fell to 55% after voters first considered a data center in their own community. Local opposition barely moved by question order: 68%→70%.
110
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Opposition to data centers has grown sharply since February. 📈 Among voters asked each question first, local opposition rose from 51%→68%, while opposition to a data center in the state of Missouri increased from 44%→66%.
110
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
🔀 We asked voters two versions of the question: would they support a new data center in their local community, and would they support one in the state of Missouri? Half saw the local question first, while half saw the Missouri question first.

🤝 Views of local race relations are stable: 51% rate them excellent/good, vs. 52% in February. But perceptions differ by race: 54% of White voters give positive ratings, compared with 18% of Black voters and 32% of non-White voters overall.

❤️ Even as ratings of the economy, schools and roads declined, views of personal well-being were comparatively stable. Physical health fell slightly from 68%→65% excellent/good, while mental health remained essentially unchanged at 67%→68%.

SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
🚧 Views of Missouri’s roads and infrastructure have deteriorated since February. Excellent/good ratings fell from 30%→23%. Today, 75% rate conditions fair/poor and negative ratings cross party lines.

SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
🏫 Views of public schools also worsened since February. Excellent/good ratings fell from 44%→38% for schools in voters’ own communities and from 28%→22% for Missouri schools statewide. Voters still rate their local schools considerably better.

💵 Economic optimism has faded since February. Excellent/good ratings fell 11 points for the U.S. economy and 7 points for Missouri’s economy. In August, just 21% rated the U.S. economy positively and 25% said the same of Missouri’s.

🗳️ Takeaway: voters may be divided over Missouri’s new congressional map But the Proposition A vote adds another challenge: figuring out which vote matches their view. Our panel results suggest that distinction is not clear to many voters.

SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Here’s why we think confusion may be part of the story: 🤔 Among February map supporters, just 48% said YES in August; 33% were unsure. Among February opponents, 53% said NO; 27% were unsure.
100
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The same voters who answered both polls became much less certain (!). 🔀 Among our 305 panelists, “not sure” jumped from 33 people (11%) in February to 101 (33%) in August. That includes voters who had previously both supported AND opposed the new map.

SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
To dig deeper, we looked at 305 voters who answered both our February & August polls. 🔎 In February, respondents saw a fuller description of the legislature’s new map & its intended 7–1 GOP effect (attached). In August, those *same* voters saw Proposition A’s ballot language

🗳️ In August, we showed voters the Proposition A ballot language they’ll see in November. The result was nearly a three-way split: ✅ 35% Yes ❌ 32% No 🤷 33% Not sure That 33% “not sure” is where the story gets especially interesting.
100
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Before looking at the numbers, one important point: YES on Proposition A approves Missouri’s new 2025 congressional map. NO rejects it and leaves the 2022 map in place. 🗺️ With that in mind, here’s how voters answered.
100
SLU/YouGov Poll @slupoll.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Attached is the wording Missouri voters will see in November. It asks whether to approve “House Bill No. 1” and describes new congressional boundaries, but does not explicitly say what a YES or NO vote would mean for the 2025 and 2022 maps.

🗺️ Missouri redistricting is in the headlines (again) today after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling. But as attention turns to Proposition A, our new SLU/YouGov Poll suggests many voters may still be confused about what a YES or NO vote actually means. 🧵
