The visual system for Islands was very fun to create. The idea: an ocean of digital noise with Islands of humanity peeping through the static. And a little help-yourself engine for endless unique branded assets for every post, print and event 👀

Made this musical score based on realtime 🚈 MRT line crowd-levels. A different way to enjoy data, and a background tune for your peak hour commute? ;) *Inspired by NYC train jazz. *Live data from LTA 🫶 Happy Circle line day! www.futureswithryan.com/orchestrain

Why is speed how we define a "good journey"? Why does GMaps portray us all as the center of the world? Our everyday tools are filled with assumptions & opinions... which means they can be challenged! Here's "Alt Maps": from cat-routes to intentional misdirection, rage reviews and social maps 👀

Testing out some new curriculum material this semester: if AI can create anything, then tomorrow's designers need much leaner, meaner and sharper ways to make critical thinking and judgement the core of their craft instead.

one of the (many) joys of not working a "job" after so long is getting to make things purely out of love again — afternoon doodles, trying to find an illustration style for a little narrative videogame i'm writing - about small animals in a big city 😊🦜

The role of the civic spaces in our cities is not in curating/preserving objects and privilege, but the conditions for human empathy, creativity and connection. It will be a challenging decade ahead for museums adapting to a world where cultural power, authority and relatability look so different.

new social contracts: It's not news that trust in institutions and traditional systems of authority is eroded (just look around at where they got us.) But it IS news that amidst all this, some people are looking to LinkedIn to find love 😅 Pragmatic, or another sign that modern society is cooked? 💀

Sometimes, the work we do is large-scale and complicated and technical. Other times it's just making sure that the way we use our #words is intentional and human; like remembering to greet you a good afternoon and remarking on your marvellous decision to spend it at the #museum :)

Something we're tracking is the shift from humans as 'creators' to 'curators'. (As AI means absolutely anyone can make absolutely anything, taste becomes the only differentiator of what's actually worth making) But perhaps that's giving us all too much credit and we're just all mindless consumers 🥲

Working with local art hero Amanda Heng and some of the best curators + designers + technologists on this comission at the National Gallery 👀 Got a bit hairy at times (as art-making does), but the president coming by to hang and join a chat about the importance of craft in the city was really nice.

Jury duty at the Singapore Design Awards 👀 Encouraged by its investment into social good. I have to say I frequently wish design in this city was a bit more "naughty" (cheeky, sharp, pointed, humourous, courageous, risky)... It's the one industry that shouldn't just be about doing safe things ;)
