"I just preferred the pacing of the book. The main character's arc felt a lot more believable," I say, taking another huge bite of my Uncrustable as my interlocutor nods on appreciatively
An upright collection of coffee table art books, including National Geographic's "Spectacle," Lonely Planet's "The Place to Be," Thames & Hudson's "What is Painting?" by Julian Bell (title typeset in Lydian so you know they're angling for a specific Vibe). Amid the serene blue spines stands a comparably-sized bright yellow entry published by DK, titled "THE BEE BOOK" in bold black lettering.

I'm delivering tremendous value in the enterprise Slack
Slack thread in #all-water-cooler: this past weekend some friends invited me to watch the first game of the world series, in part so i could learn how to watch baseball.

they kept recommending a slide deck which explained how the game worked, made by "some rando on the internet".
this is what they shared with me:
https://slim.computer/assets/teaching/ baseball.pdf

at first i thought maybe this deck was made by some other person who happened to call themselves "slim lim".
but after a few slides i was convinced it was made by our own @sliminal and eerie.

New blug: feeling like I’ve gotten better at conceptualizing and worse at verbalizing over time
I don’t know how this works for everyone else, so here’s an example: suppose I’m engaged in a back-and-forth with a knowledgeable interlocutor on a reasonably nuanced topic, say, baseball or the desired behavior of a particular programming language construct or why a particular person we both know behaves the way they do. Or suppose I’m reading a blog post that lays out a multifaceted argument in favor of some proposal. As soon as I understand what the person is saying (which is very much not a given), an entire response—enthusiastic partial agreement, hesitant elaboration, and multi-subpoint refutation framed by indignation—materializes all at once within my body in pre-linguistic form, and I feel overwhelmed trying to even capture it for myself, let alone convey it to another party. In practice, this usually manifests as me staring into space while speaking comically slowly, or stammering and replacing words with noises which, to me, capture the underlying emotion and therefore both denotation and connotation, but to everyone else just sound like noises. A far cry from the supposedly “articulate” communication my teachers once commended!

World Series Game 1: Dodgers @ Blue Jays (W, 11-4) We recently got a television off Marketplace Zuckerberg. The main challenge is remembering to look at the screen, because I'll be focused on my scoresheet while listening attentively to the announcers and then forget to actually watch.
Scorebook filled out in pencil for the Toronto Blue Jays' (Yesavage) 11-4 win at home over the Los Angeles Dodgers (Snell) in Game 1 of the 2025 World Series, October 24. The Dodgers took an early lead in the 2nd and 3rd inning on a series of walks and singles, until the Jays' center fielder Varsho tied the game with a two-run home run in the 4th. The score remained even until the top of the 6th, when the Dodgers' starting pitcher Snell loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, hit, and hit by pitch. This prompted a Dodgers bullpen implosion, allowing the Blue Jays to score 9 runs in the 6th inning across 12 plate appearances. Notably, the Jays' Addison Barger accomplished the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history during this inning.

I went to a baseball game alone on Friday night, and it was the most fun I've had in recent memory!! I found a great ticket on last-minute resale. Brought my radio and scored the entire game listening to the broadcast with one earbud in. Giants won, and there was a Pokémon drone show afterwards!

so obsessed with this
In late February, Michael Grimes, a senior official at the Department of Commerce and former investment banker at Morgan Stanley, conducted brief interviews with employees of the CHIPS Program Office, which oversees the grants.

In interactions some described as “demeaning,” Mr. Grimes asked employees to justify their intellect by providing test results from the SAT or an IQ test, said four people familiar with the evaluations. Some were asked to do math problems, like calculate the value of four to the fourth power or long division.

Finally bothered to learn about Daylight Savings Time
Poorly hand-drawn infographic titled “Daylight Savings Time for Fools (me), California Edition”. A long bar represents a year in the Gregorian calendar. The first ~quarter (January through March-ish) is PST (UTC-8), then lose 1 hr :( into PDT (UTC-7) for ~half the year from March-October/November-ish, then gain 1 hr :) back into PST (UTC-8) through the end of December. There are two side-by-side comparisons using sun and moon icons to illustrate the progression of daylight throughout the day. The “Normal” version shows the 9AM-5PM workday starting after sunrise and ending past sunset, whereas the “+DST (lies)” version shows the 9AM-5PM window shifted earlier so that it perfectly aligns with the period of sunrise. A disclaimer says “not to scale; enlarged to show texture”.

"We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us" 🫠
GitHub PR by user multiplealiases, September 15, 2024: "WSL/wsl-config.md: rewrite lead for clarity #2021"

> This is a rewrite of the lead section, as I feel the previous one was overly long-winded, yet did not meaningfully summarize the most important points of the article in a way that enables readers to quickly answer the questions "what is wsl.conf?" and "what is .wslconfig?". The information is technically present, but it is scattered about in the body of the article when it could be in the lead.

> The main thing this adds is a short comparison table that summarizes the differences between wsl.conf and .wslconfig, as I feel it will make the summarized information (otherwise totally buried in the sections below) much easier to find for future readers.User mattwojo commented on December 16, 2024 before closing the PR: "Thanks for the contribution here and appreciate your attention to detail. We have decided to keep as-is.. part of that decision is that more and more folks are using AI chat to access guidance and tables don't always translate well in that context."

The next set of vertices are combinations of these constructs: "import qualified Foo as T", "import Foo as T (Text)", and "import qualified Foo (Text)". The final vertex (1, 1, 1) is "import qualified Foo as T (Text)".

Here's the next paragraph. Maybe I'm just dumb but I don't see how this is anything other than the most milquetoast neoliberal take; certainly it does not seem obviously fallacious?
The United States is obviously failing to regulate immigration. Over the past four years, some eight million people settled in this country, and most of them did so unlawfully.

As the editorial board wrote on Friday, there is no doubt that the federal government needs to act urgently to establish control over who is able to live and work in the United States.
But Donald Trump, the president-elect, is wrong to argue that many immigrants already living in the country should be deported, and that future immigration should be reduced.

America actually needs more immigrants.

I got this surprisingly impressive response from Claude 3.5 Sonnet the other day, which actually helped clarify my thinking on a research-y problem (this usually doesn't happen, especially with PL stuff). Thanks, Ants! Thants.
Me: You're right that making `Result` a proper thenable overloads the meaning of `then` in JavaScript. But consider this just as a thought experiment. If we did make `Result` a thenable, we could use JS's native `async`/`await` syntax with it. And then wouldn't we end up with something like `await await foo()` where `foo` returns a `Promise<ThenableResult<Foo, Bar>>`? Wouldn't this `await await` be analogous to `lift . lift`?

Claude: This is a really interesting observation! You're onto something - there is an analogy here, but with some subtle differences.

If we made `Result` thenable and had a `Promise<Result<A, E>>`, then yes, we'd need `await await` to fully unwrap it. This is superficially similar to `lift . lift` because:

1. Both involve repeated application of an operator to "dig through" layers
2. Both are about accessing the inner value through multiple wrappers
3. The number of repetitions corresponds to the number of layers

However, there's a key difference in what these operators are doing:

- `lift` in a monad transformer stack is about lifting operations UP through layers to the top level of the stack. It's saying "this operation from a lower layer should be visible at the current layer"
- `await` is about unwrapping/extracting values DOWN through layers to get to the inner content. It's more like repeated applications of `join` or `>>=` (bind)

So while the syntax looks similar [some code snippets in Haskell and TS]

They're actually going in opposite directions - `lift` promotes operations up the stack, while `await` extracts values down through the wrappers.

That said, it's a fascinating parallel because both patterns emerge from similar underlying causes: the need to work with multiple layers of monadic structure without built-in composition tools. The repetitive syntax in both cases points to a missing abstraction for handling these layered effects more elegantly.

I mean no offense, but the Catholic Church's indulgences literally sound like Pokémon GO mechanics (daily activities, in-person gathering bonus, rewards geofenced to specific pilgrimage locations)
Among the particular grants, which, on closer inspection, will be seen to be included in one or more of the four general grants, especially the first, the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum draws special attention 161 to four activities for which a plenary indulgence can be gained on any day, though only once a day:
1. Piously reading or listening to Sacred Scripture for at least half an hour. [161
2. Adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist for at least half an hour. 16]
3. The pious exercise of the Stations of the Cross. 116]
4. Recitation of the Rosary or the Akathist in a church or oratory, or in a family, a religious community, an association of the faithful and, in general, when several people come together for an honourable purpose. 116][Pokémon GO logo] Trainers,

My "Roman Empire," as it were, is the amount of methodological rigor that went into the production of Blue's Clues. Khan Academy could never?!?!
The creators' and producers' goals were to "empower, challenge, and build the self-esteem of preschoolers"[58] while entertaining them. Kessler, Santomero and Johnson were influenced by Sesame Street, the first children's television program to utilize a detailed and comprehensive educational curriculum developed from research.[59] "We wanted to learn from Sesame Street and take it one step further," Santomero said.[60] Like Sesame Street, formative research which the producers called their "secret sauce,"[61] was used during all aspects of the creative and decision-making process during the production of Blue's Clues.[62][63] In addition to a curriculum that emphasized reasoning skills relevant to preschoolers' everyday lives, the producers wanted to include audience participation, called by Variety its "call and response style,"[25] that encouraged mastery of the information presented, positive reinforcement, and prosocial messages.[58] In their first brainstorming sessions in 1994, Santomero, Kessler, and Johnson decided to promote mastery rather than rote learning or memorizing, make sure that their viewers knew the answers to the puzzles with which they were presented, and include elements of surprise and play. By 2001, the show's research team consisted of head researcher Alice Wilder, Alison Sherman, Karen Leavitt, and Koshi Dhingra.[64][note 3] The research team and creators worked collaboratively.[66]Unlike Sesame Street, which tested a third of its episodes,[67] the Blue's Clues research team field tested every episode three times with children aged between two to six in preschool environments such as Head Start programs, public schools, and private day care centers. There were three phases of testing: content evaluation, video evaluations, and content analysis.[68] In their tests of the pilot, conducted throughout the New York City area with over 100 children aged from three to seven,[69] the show was "immediately successful."[2] They found that as the pilot progressed, children's attention was not only captured and sustained, but they became excited and actively participated with what they saw, to the point that they stood up to get closer to the television and spoke back to the host.[70] The producers and researchers also consulted outside advisers, who were chosen based on their expertise and the needs of each script. As Anderson stated, the formative research team served "as a liaison between the feedback provided by the preschoolers and outside advisers and the production team, including writers, talent, producers, directors, element artists, and animators."[68]Jennings Bryant conducted a two-year longitudinal study of the effects of Blue's Clues at the University of Alabama in 2001 to ascertain whether or not the show's curriculum goals were achieved. He compared regular viewers and non-viewers and found that the show's episode repetition strategy improved children's comprehension while holding their attention and increasing their participation, which suggested that watching Blue's Clues increased children's learning and social interactions. At the end of the study, regular viewers outperformed the non-viewers, solving problems more successfully and systematically.[120] Anderson stated, "Given the program's large audience, it appears that the program is not only doing well, but it is also doing good."[113]
