The McConnell situation is actually a very serious and sad problem whereby they wash up on shore on their backs and can't recover. It's the reason that Charles Darwin lost his faith in God.

The only interactions people like Dawkins have with others are reflecting his own solipsism back at him. It is not surprising therefore that LLMs serve to find the optimal solution to that equation.

I do think there is a kind of survivorship bias here as well, by which people don't account for the inconveniences they already have, that are looked past as normal.

Can you plug in headphones to the ps5? I don't stream so I don't know if that cuts the audio to the AV out, but it should stop the ps5 from trying to produce controller audio.

Plato wasn't being a dickhead when he said that anyone who would be actually good at leading has to be forced to do it against their will.

To be fair, I think a lot of these problems are exacerbated by the way people across the board, pro and anti, insist upon using the phrase AI as if it actually means something.

The problem with BotW isn't degradation so much as the enemies are tanky and the combat is boring. Fighting enemies feels like a chore so you're already pissed off before your weapon breaks and it feels like an F U from the game.

There's nothing crazy about that. The existence of presidential pardons is, by definition, an admission that the US justice system is fundamentally corrupt.

It is easier to believe that there is a malicious cabal making things shit than face the reality that human society has outgrown its collective capacity for intelligence.

This is where we situate the problem with American politics. The argument is immediately pivoted to "but people weren't made to feel that it's about them". That isn't democracy that's narcissism. Clearly a lot of American voters (left and right) don't understand the difference.

The thing is that it is a biased set, because programmers are far more likely than the average Joe to understand LLMs and their limitations, and therefore far more likely to be ready to go at using them productively. I've only just started messing around with Claude and find it a mixed bag.

It's the same as any other addiction. It creates the conditions that allow a person to think something about themselves that isn't true. What that something is and why they need to think it varies from person to person.

A morality that does not have contempt doesn't have a distinction between good and bad. The idea that it is moral to valorize a race to the bottom is what created this state of affairs in the first place. All of the content of a moral system exists in who is considered deserving of contempt.

The statistical nature of LLMs isn't the problem. The problem is the people who think they can order something else (be that LLM or other human) to do their thinking for them.

I think some people just don't like being made aware that Alex O'Connor is not the philosopher they think he is. Perfectly acceptable human being I'm sure, but not a philosopher by any objective standard, as far as I can tell.

There are a lot of things that can be said about AI on a technical level. But on a social level it will never be anything more than projection of people's resentment at skill and intelligence.

Yes but the supreme court just ruled that not applicable to public bathrooms. And yet people's focus is on the SC and the EHRC when the actual problem is that the Equality Act and the EU directive are not good enough.

I'm familiar. That doesn't contradict anything I said. Higher courts making nuanced judgements on hard cases do more than read one paragraph from a quangos guidelines. People do not benefit themselves by having undue confidence in their poor understanding of complex legal decision making.

I don't claim to be an expert on the jurisprudence of article 8 but the phrase "private life" in this context basically means "what you do in your own home." So it's not wrong for the ECHR to say that it would likely be found not relevant to the use of a public bathroom in a court of law.

Trigger warnings are great and all, but the first thing a person should be asking themself, as a writer, is whether the potentially triggering material has any need or right to be there in the first place.

The problem is the political ontology of journalists, who insist that every question has to come down to an arbitrary choice of binary "sides" so they can claim impartiality. That's not how reality works, most meaningful questions do not have an uncontroversially left Vs right stratification

It is normal to produce new or updated statutory guidance in response to a court judgement of this nature. SG isn't determining the rules, it's explaining to non lawyers what the current understanding of the judicially accepted correct interpretation of the *existing* legislation is.

Well I clearly didn't put it all on you, so maybe parse sentences better? But thank you for giving a pocket example: everything is individualized and reduced to sentiment. America (the heterogenous aggregate) is perfectly capable of learning if it wants to.
