What a guy
4 panel comic

Panel 1: a wizard in blue robe and white beard sitting with small forg at a desk behind the computer. “Click, click” is the sound of the mouse to be heard
Panel 2: close up on the computer screen. There’s a green check mark and a full loading bar on it. From off screen someone, probably the wizard, says “boom, there it is”.
Panel 3: forg is left behind alone at his desk. There’s an open door in the background. Forg says “thanks installation wizard” and a little pink heart appears, showing his affection.
Panel 4: we see now that the wizard has already left the house after a job well done. He replies to forg watching him go from his window: “it’s what I do”

editing text in a REPL wizardzines.com/comics/editi... (from "The Secret Rules of the Terminal", which is out now! wizardzines.com/zines/terminal)
editing text in a REPL doesn’t always work

little stick figure, horrified: when I press my ARROW KEYS it just prints out [[D??? what?
this is because every program has fo implement text editing itself

terminal program author, represented by a nonplussed looking stick figure with medium length straight hair, thinking: but I just want arrow keys to work?? shouldn’t that be automatic?

unix, represented by a box with a smiley face: NOPE you gotta do it
you do gef a few things automatically

    backspace (occasionally backspace won’t work and you have to use Ctrl+H instead)
    Ctrl+W (delete word)
    Ctrl+U (delete line)

(see page 25 for what “automatically” means)
REPLs mostly have the same keyboard shortcuts

there’s a very popular library called “readline”, and everyone either uses it or imitates how it works

for example Ctrl+A (“go to beginning of line”) comes from readline
rlwrap adds readline keyboard shortcuts

for example on my machine the dash shell doesn’t use readline but you can make it better by running:

rlwrap dash
built in programs on Mac don’t use readline

(for example sq1ite3)

this is probably because readline is GPL licensed

They use libedit which is worse. I like to install a sqlite version with readline support and use that instead.

more terminal fun: canonical mode wizardzines.com/comics/canon...
panel 1: the terminal driver: an interface that hasn't changed since the 80s

person: “I pressed an arrow key and it just printed out ^[[D???”
terminal driver: “what's an arrow key?"

panel 2: when you're typing text, there are two situations

1. by default: the terminal driver (part of the OS) is responsible

"canonical mode"

2. the program is responsible

“raw mode”

panel 3: "canonical mode" is a terrible way to edit text

because the terminal driver hasn't changed much since the 80s, you can only do:

1. backspace
2. Ctrl+W (delete word)
3. Ctrl+U (delete line)

panel 4: how canonical mode works

1. you type "helll" + backspace
2. the terminal emulator turns what you typed into bytes
3. the terminal driver passes on "hell" and interprets the backspace
4. the program gets "hello\n"

In canonical mode, terminal driver doesn't send anything to the program until you press Enter.

In raw mode, the terminal driver just sends “hell\xFFo\n” without changing it

panel 5: how to try out canonical mode

Run `cat` and type some stuff!

Interactive programs almost never use canonical mode because it's so limited.

But if you run into it `rlwrap $COMMAND` can help

terminal escape codes wizardzines.com/comics/escap...
Panel 1: a program's input and outputs are streams of bytes

everything you type goes into standard input

all the output you see comes from either
standard output or standard error

your terminal emulator can only communicate with programs by reading/writing bytes

panel 2: some inputs/outputs are text and some are special instructions

in: mouse position, ctrl+left arrow
out: make text green, make cursor invisible

panel 3: these special instructions are called "escape codes"

they're called "escape codes" because they all start with the ESC character

panel 4: example: how colours get set

program: “^[[31m”

Terminal emulator: “ok, I'll make text red from now on!!”

(there are also codes for bold, underline, background colour)

panel 5: programs can easily "break" your terminal by printing escape codes

program: “oops I made your cursor disappear”

It's easy to fix though, run reset to print a special escape code that resets everything

It's easy to fix though, run reset to print a special escape code that resets everything

shell history wizardzines.com/comics/shell...
panel 1: your shell has a history of the commands you ran

some ways to access history:

* press the up arrow
* run history
* search it with Ctrl-R (in bash/zsh)

panel 2: how long does your shell store history for?

in bash, the default is
500 commands (not enough!)

in fish, the default is
256,000 commands

if you're using bash, you might want to configure it to store more history

panel 3: when does your shell save history?

by default, bash and zsh only save history to a file when you exit the shell

fish saves the history continuously

panel 4: where is history stored?

bash: .bash_history

zsh: run echo $HISTFILE

fish: mine is in ~/.local/share/fish/fish_history

person (thinking): “sometimes I copy over my shell history when setting up a new computer!”

panel 5: a useful history tool: atuin

atuin lets you:

* save unlimited history
* search history more easily
* save commands as soon as you run them
* sync your history (optionally)

panel 6: gotcha: history in zsh only shows 15 entries

You can run history 0 to see all the history

panel 7:

commands that start with a space don't go in your history. good for passwords!

(might depend on your shell's config)
