My daughter brought me dessert and then presented me with a phone screen which said “Leave a tip”. The girl is a comic genius/mercenary and I couldn’t be prouder/poorer.

Honestly nothing kills the bramble nor the anemone- wouldn’t be surprised if they grow through the tarp! But they’re peanuts compared to the bamboo out the back, I think I need to ask china for a panda to deal with that…

The cardboard didn’t kill the bramble and Japanese anemone enough for my gardening friend to recover from illness and return to destroy them, so tarp for winter. I like that the rain in my garden now sounds like rain on a tent.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

I talk about this with regard to the “Cornish is dead” myth. It did well for 19thC scholars to go “ooooh look a mysterious land with its dead language we must research it” while ingnoring plenty of bilingual Cornish folk because they didn’t go to Oxford so what would they know about Cornish

GTA 6 is about to make more money than any piece of media has ever made in history. And let me tell you that the government do not give a shit about that because the cruelty and lack of enjoyment is the point. We can’t have people doing things they enjoy - work must be drudgery!

Causes of meltdowns in the past week: - being dirty but not having the energy to shower - poor UX design - being told I had done enough work on a form (I had) - being on a bus without my headphones - spilling a glass of water - the smell of a shop … and many more!

It was such a fascinating series and one of several that has made me think you are a key modern historian in an area that doesn’t get the research it needs.

Mate, with all the love in the world, maybe this is not the place to be espousing that theory. Maybe, just maybe, this is the time for you to be quiet and not tell women what their “problem” is and what they “need” to do and why men are so much better.

He’s right and very technical - if you want to make it simpler you could say it’s a form of bait and switch. The interesting thing about these is that the bait has been made by someone first in earnest and then the joke writer is placing it as bait and adding a switch punchline.

Pigeon sat in the middle of the pavement with a wonky wing letting me get really close. Rang my mum - she couldn’t come to help me get it to the vet. Put the phone down thinking who else I could ring… pigeon flew away. Just a wonky lil weirdo. 🤷🏻‍♀️

IIRC there *is* a Y pestis vaccine but it’s not widespread because the plague tends to get pretty well contained because… well, cos it’s the plague, we’ve done this a few times and know the drill for the most part.

DinoNephew requested “red dinosaur cake” for his birthday this year. I think I did alright. In fact, I know I did alright cos DinoNephew kept trying to lean over the table and lick the whole cake. The true mark of success.
A fairly poorly baked cake shaped to look like a volcano, with red icing making its way down gullies cut into the top half of the cake. Small toy dinosaurs from kinder eggs are stuck haphazardly around the cake and the blue tray upon which it sits. Crushed up bits of flake bars have been thrown upon the cake in an attempt to disguise the many sins this cake is committing. There is a thin line of green icing around the outside of the cake, as if the baker tried to decorate it using writing icing and gave up almost instantly. It is glorious. It’s another picture of the volcakeno. The angle is slightly different, there are different dinosaurs in view. “Why,” they seem to cry, “why would you place us upon a cake that spells our destruction? The tide of thick red icing-lava draws ever closer, and we might have run, but our feet have been pressed into the side of the, now we think about it, weirdly tiny volcano in proportion to us, the dinosaurs. This is surely a mark of our hubris. We have grown too large for this world and now we must perish, our vaguely cocoa island the only land we have known, its seams of butterscotch unmined, the hard blue sea no comfort.”

Yeah. Yeah it looks like that.

TRAIN PEOPLE! I call on thee! My TrainNephew is young and loves train. We know this because one of his favourite sentences is “I love train!” Good non-fiction train books for toddlers/young folk? Viaducts a bonus. (I have to start Christmas shopping soon cos there are too many children.)

I was on a podcast a couple of years ago and had NO IDEA it was also being filmed for YouTube and I look… well I look like I haven’t showered, pulled on the first clean thing I saw that day and am not at all masking or playing for the camera while I talk about why Chaucer is sexy.

This is almost certainly true, and the UK fails women refugees in multiple ways, including by refusing safe routes to come here, wrongly rejecting asylum claims, barring family reunion & not recognising trafficking victims promptly or at all. If only Mahmood had the power to do something about this

We’re also missing the scariest type of all, septicaemic. Dead within 24 hours of getting it, essentially untreatable, it’s rare because it kills you so fast there’s no time to spread it but apparently it’s the most painful of the three as well as the most deadly. Just charming.

Mabel Slattery @slatteroo.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I mean they’re all the same bacterium and I believe can shift from one type to another depending on where it sets up shop? but yeah, pneumonic plague is spready af.

If you’re tested and treated in time. And that time frame can be quite small. And treatment isn’t always successful either. Plague fucking sucks.

Mabel Slattery @slatteroo.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
So I know a bit about plague because of medievaling and basically if you don’t get it in quite a small window antibiotics do very little. They probably didn’t even realise what it was til it was too late. Which is horribly sad. But why would you suspect plague when you have a cough?

Yersina Pestis has 3 forms: - Bubonic plague (the Famous One) - Pneumonic plague (the One that Spreads Fast) - Septicaemic plague (the Really Fucking Scary One)

It’s okay, I think you were coming from an understandable place but there would still have been lots of misunderstanding if we hadn’t coincidentally bumped the right facts together at the right time! It’s not that people don’t think you’re human it’s just it’s hard to spot where the disconnect was!
