the clearly best show on the 21st century is the nero wolfe mystery series starring timothy hutton and maury chaykin that was on A&E for a couple years in the early aughts and i blame all the rest of you for not watching it enough to realize.

I would recommend jumping around a bit! By no means do you have to read them in order, except for the Zeck Trilogy (And Be A Villain, The Second Confession, and In The Best Families) as well as Black Mountain. The short stories are fun too as they move at a different pace.

those books are super interesting because if you look past the badly aged stuff, there's a lot of things in there that are refreshingly progressive for their time.

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

yeah i liked em at first, but that was when i had barely read any of Stout's work & was reading any Wolfe I could get my hands on. Once I was more familiar with Stout's Wolfe and Archie I just couldn't. pretty much everyone on the Wolfe Discord server agrees with that as well

slate/silver/austin θΔ❤️‍🔥🐾🌎 @slate-cactus.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

Yes this!! Stout was a master of having his characters be so obvious about their thoughts and intentions (especially Wolfe and Archie) without having them state the obvious, assuming the reader is intelligent enough to pick up on it. When they just come right out and say it it falls flat.

Unfortunately I have seen sooo many MAGA/right wing thinking that the Wolfe series agrees with them. I will never understand it.

I was losing it at the part where Archie called Wolfe his "hummingbird"- like sir the closet is GLASS.

Yeah, I had read a few of the earlier ones at the time but I was reading them as soon as I could get my hands on em- was relying on libraries and used bookstores

Yeah!! In "In the Best Families," he ends up running a successful detective business while Wolfe is AWOL.

slate/silver/austin θΔ❤️‍🔥🐾🌎 @slate-cactus.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

Not really sure what you're talking about, Stout's books were extremely progressive for their time.

slate/silver/austin θΔ❤️‍🔥🐾🌎 @slate-cactus.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

The Nero Wolfe fan server I helped start has spent quite a bit of time dragging on Goldsborough, lol. He lacks the same subtlety in his writing, overuses Stout's plot devices to the point that they feel cliche, and isn't willing to take the same risks with the characters. Overall they just fall flat

slate/silver/austin θΔ❤️‍🔥🐾🌎 @slate-cactus.bsky.social · 26/06/2026

I somehow accidentally read In The Best Families before the other two Zeck novels. Still enjoyed it but I liked it a lot better once I had the context of who Zeck was

i really loved the pattern of archie saying something insensitive and wolfe just immediately shutting it down. it showed that people can change their views. those books were extremely progressive for their time.
