Ooo, I remember that one. I got to see it early :3

It's pretty simple, at least in concept. It works just like a text editor, except you're modifying the raw bytes. The middle column is the raw bytes represented in hexadecimal. The right column is the same thing in ASCII.

I'm planning on implementing these as a bare minimum, if I can figure out how: - ncurses TUI - modify/insert/delete bytes - undo/redo - jump to n offset - forwards & backwards search - find & replace - 'save as' - comparing 2 files with color coding (2 panes, side by side)

Question for my fellow nerdy floofs out there. What features would you like to see in a lightweight CLI hex editor?

210

🔞 SlackFoxx 🔞 @slackfoxx.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

I'm making a CLI hex editor. I dunno if it will be any good compared to what already exists, but I think I've figured out how to work with binary data in C, at the very least.

This is surely what Dennis Ritchie intended when he added macros to C.

Petitioning ANSI and ISO to replace "if ... else" with "given ... alternatively"

There are a lot of places I expect to see "whence". The C standard library was not one of them.

Guys, Ploob just got bought by Nullge. They’re routing all requests through Qwop now, which is like Jev with BSON. Nullge is making Kalshi for Dogs. Rumor is Ploob is adding armpit scans for verification soon. Cancel your Ploob+ if you can’t get off Ploob. Get off Ploob

I wish, would've made my work day a lot more interesting. 0w0 But no, this was literally the first thing my brain conjured up this morning. No idea what prompted it, last time I watched Inspector Gadget my age was a single digit, lmao

I done goofed. Goofed it right up. (I didn't do a pencil sketch, was just doodling with a pen.)

This Ikea product image makes me viscerally uncomfortable. It's all so uncanny. The curvy light fixture, the hairy chair, the wood... face-thing, that awful paper texture thing on the wall, the weird floor mirror.

If you're ever looking for new music, check out www.music-map.com You put in a band/artist you like, and it maps out similar music, the proximity between any two bands/artists based on how many people like both of them.

If you want to get into pixel art/animation, I highly recommend Aseprite. It's on sale for ~$12 USD right now. It's the best pixel art tool out there for just about everything except tilemaps (it can do them, but there are specialized tilemap editors that handle them better.)

I use an Epson Ecotank. It uses bottled ink instead of cartridges, so the ink is dirt cheap. The downside is you have to clean the printheads and print something at least once a week, otherwise the printheads get clogged. It's awesome if you print a ton, but if not go with cartridge or laser.

My USB-C earbuds stopped working, and all I got left is some old 3.5mm jack Skullcandy earbuds. :( Those things cost $15 and sounded way better than any wireless set I ever had, even the $80 Sony ones I used previously.

I was so excited for her to notice all the little details and brushwork and all the techniques I learned, but she focused entirely on the goat and the colors. I was really happy she loved it, but internally I was screaming "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DONT SEE ALL THE INDIVIDUAL HAIRS I PAINTED?!?!"

God, I wish I didn't know that feeling. I did an oil painting of a goat with holly in it's mouth as a christmas present for my mum one year, took me like a month and a half cause I'm not great at painting, (not including drying time).

Here's pics of the covers in case anyone wants to check out the rest of the recipes. You might have trouble finding a copy of The Eastern European Cookbook though, it's from the 1970's. It's so old it still lists Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia as countries that exist lmao.
