Mmmmm, baked bean pie that’s round at the top but a wedge at the bottom…
An AI slop image of a deeply disturbing pie that appears to be stuffed with pale baked beans. The edge of the crust goes all the way around at the top like it’s a tiny round pie, but at the bottom there’s a point like it’s a wedge. Anyway, the whole thing sucks and Sam Altman belongs in prison.

In 2003, we launched Teen Titans with the tagline “Truth. Justice. Pizza.” Some high-up folks at DC told us it wouldn’t work. That superhero stories had to be serious. That there was no room for humor or fun. 23 years later, note the tagline. Excited to watch.

Hilarious and deeply insightful writing by @brianphillips.lol.
Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.

Ken Paxton is one of the most corrupt people in politics. Texans should be sending him to prison — not the Senate.
All along, Mr. Paxton kept getting richer. When he first won public office, he listed his assets as less than $200,000. Two decades later, on an annual state salary of about $150,000, he reported a net worth approaching $8 million with residential properties in Oklahoma, Florida, Utah and Hawaii. Mr.
Paxton has been secretive about the source of his wealth, creating a blind trust and then failing for years to disclose to regulators the assets in that trust as required by state ethics rules.

Like, I mean, I’d *maybe* vote for Lo Bosworth. But fucking Spencer????

I have used this recipe with all types of dried beans, and it always turns out great. For extra kick add fresh jalepeño and/or a tablespoon or two of hot sauce.
Cuban-Style Black Beans
Double, triple, or quadruple the recipe and freeze for feeding crowds down the road. These beans are great with Ropa Vieja or as a basic side for dinner (think rice and beans!), as well as an eggy breakfast.

By Rick Martinez | October 13, 2017

MAKES ABOUT 2 QUARTS

Ingredients
1 pound dried black beans, picked through, rinsed
1 bay leaf
1 medium onion, finely chopped, divided
1 green bell pepper, seeds and ribs removed, finely chopped, divided
8 garlic cloves, finely grated, divided
5 teaspoons Diamond Crystal or 1 tablespoon Morton kosher salt, plus more
1 teaspoon dried Mexican or Italian oregano, divided
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper
Cilantro leaves with tender stems (for serving; optional)

Preparation
Bring beans, bay leaf, 1/4 cup chopped onion, 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper, 1 Tbsp. grated garlic, 5 tsp. Diamond Crystal or 1 Tbsp. Morton salt, 1/2 tsp. oregano, and 5 quarts water to a boil in a large pot.

Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally and adding more hot water if needed to cover, until beans are tender and covered by about 1/4" liquid, 2 1/2-3 hours. Discard bay leaf.

Meanwhile, heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-low. Add remaining onion, bell pepper, garlic, and oregano; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are very soft and beginning to brown, 15-20 minutes.

Stir into cooked beans. Top with cilantro, if using.

Do Ahead: Beans can be made 3 months ahead. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Vonnegut. Happy Armistice Day, everyone.
Vonnegut’s text from the end of the preface to Breakfast of Champions:

“So this book is a sidewalk strewn with junk, trash which I throw over my shoulders as I travel in time back to November eleventh, nineteen hundred and twenty-two.

I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day.

When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden…”“…silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.

Armistice Day has become Veterans' Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans' Day is not.

So I will throw Veterans' Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don't want to throw away any sacred things.

What else is sacred? Oh, Romeo and Juliet, for instance.

And all music is.”

A fun fact about McCarthyism is that just two and a half years after he was condemned and censured, Sen. Joseph McCarthy drank himself to death at 48. Fevers break. Petty tyrants fall. Censorship and persecution drive good people to stand together and fight back.
After his condemnation and censure, McCarthy continued to perform his senatorial duties for another two and a half years. His career as a major public figure, however, had been ruined. His colleagues in the Senate avoided him; his speeches on the Senate floor were delivered to a near-empty chamber or received with intentional and conspicuous displays of inattention.

The press that had once recorded his every public statement now ignored him, and outside speaking engagements dwindled almost to nothing. Eisenhower, finally freed of McCarthy's political intimidation, quipped to his Cabinet that McCarthyism was now
"McCarthywasm".McCarthy died in the Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48. His death certificate listed the cause of death as "Hepatitis, acute, cause
unknown"; previously doctors had not reported him to be in critical condition. It was hinted in the press that he died of alcoholism (cirrhosis of the liver), an estimation that is now accepted by modern biographers. Thomas C.
Reeves argues that he effectively died by suicide.

I love you all but as I’ve said before: social media is a Fisher-Price Steering Wheel. Sure, the wheel turns and the horn works. But it’s not hooked up to anything.
A photo of a Fisher-Price Steering Wheel, a colorful children’s toy that lets babies pretend they’re driving a real car — which is exactly what we’re doing if we fall into the trap of thinking that posting on social media is ever going to create any kind of real or lasting change. Of course, it’s helped spread messaging and organized movements — everything from the Arab Spring to MeToo to the resurgence of white supremacist movements. But if you want real change, that takes real action in the real world. We can’t post our way out of this.

Post a non-religious photo you think of as holy.
Voyager 1’s Pale Blue Dot photo, about which the great astronomer Carl Sagan wrote: “From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds…

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

Also worth noting: They’re killing the media industry *first*. Techbros have been very clear that their goal is to put as many people out of work as possible. This is nothing more or less than an attack by the 1% upon the rest of us that, if left unchecked, will crash the global economy.
