I pre-ordered! Y'all, I had the privilege to read some early versions of chapters in this book and let me say it was so good! Debbie is a fantastic storyteller and teacher.

I like this idea of doing a real world problem. I have them do multi-spec unknowns but it's not got a story. I've got a year to think about changes.

About 5 years ago I was in a faculty meeting and a humanities professor was so upset that llms could write ok essays. They were despairing how to make meaningful assignments. I remember thinking thanks goodness llms couldn't do chemistry, yet. Our time would come. I guess it's now!

Not allowed to do anything synchronous since students can be worldwide. The problem is that if they want to cheat, they can.

I like the idea of critiquing the gen-AI solution, but couldn't they just feed that back into gen-AI again? I don't want to encourage use of gen-AI at all.

I also had some students this summer turn in great work. One had notes written on the DEPT like "no CH3! Is there a ring?" Which made me smile because they GOT it. The other students who used llm won't ever understand the satisfaction from solving it yourself, I suppose.

I did some googling and found that there are multiple machine learning models developed to solve unknown structures from spectroscopy, which seems great for research. But if you don't know first principles how can you verify the output of the ai? How do I convince (grad) students this is important?

Dr. Z @skzingales.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I only noticed on the last assignment when some students described peaks that weren't there in the spectra they were given. This kind of hallucination screams llm to me.

Dr. Z @skzingales.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
So I was teaching an online, asynchronous (shudder, I know) grad course on spectroscopy this summer. I'm pretty sure some students used llm to solve their problem sets. It's against my syllabus policy obviously, but what can I practically do in future? #chemsky #chemchat

Usually it's a lighter version of the BS, less overall chem classes, less math, more room for electives. Can be an option for pre-whatevers so they can take other courses.
