4. The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls This was a simple idea. My Father is 90 years old, and I have precious few recordings of him. It's funny how we go through life taking photos, particularly on our phones, but rarely record sound, even when the conversation is interesting. 1/3

3. Colours Of Our Day (Remix) The inclusion of a 'remix' is arguably sometimes an excuse for a record label to extend a band's catalogue, though it really came into its own in the '90s when dance music came to the fore. 1/4

2. The Ill Wind Since the release of the album, I've been busy beavering away on a bunch of new songs. 'The Ill Wind' was penned with this in mind, but somehow it just doesn't fit quite right amongst the other songs, and better suits the feel of the 'Answers On A Postcard' 1/2

My 'Shoreline' EP is released tomorrow. Here are a few thoughts on each of the songs: 1. Shoreline Around twelve months ago, I was invited to perform at a festival and wanted to write something special for the set. Around two weeks before the gig, I came up with the chord 1/4

Track #12 Answers On A Postcard I came up with this instrumental several months ago, and performed it at a local open-mic evening. At the time, it didn't even have a title, so I asked the crowd to let me know if they came up with anything, followed by 1/3

Today, I'm taking a look at the final two tracks on the album. Track #11 Yesterday This song is a commentary on other people, and how we believe that we know somebody only to discover that their political viewpoints or beliefs are very different from our own, and how we 1/2

Track #10 Colours Of Our Day Heading back to the shoreline for this song, which is written about a group of fishermen who don't arrive home due to terrible weather. The anxiety on their families' faces as they eagerly anticipate news of their safety. 1/2

Today, I'm taking a look at tracks 9 & 10 on the album. Track #9 Waking Dream I wanted to write about the changing of the seasons in a way that is less identifiable than simply leaves falling off the trees. It's also written from the perspective of someone 1/2

A wonderful review here of 'Answers On A Postcard' from @brettspaceman.bsky.social, who has taken a look at our debut album for [Sic] Magazine. "Lyrically and thematically there’s an ‘inner and outer‘ dynamic at play. The results are heartfelt and melodic." 🔗 www.sicmagazine.net/17768/sky-pa...

Track #8 The Secret Garden As children, we love the idea of a secret garden. A piece of land with a secret wooden door, hidden at the bottom of the main garden. In our heads, it's full of apple trees, has a winding path, lots of colourful flowers. 1/2

Today, I'm taking a microscope to tracks 7 & 8 on the album. 7. 3 a.m. This one is about unrequited love. It's about the thoughts that people have for someone that are never engaged, but vividly come alive at night, either in dreams 1/2

Track #6 You're A World Away This song is about keeping the lines of friendship open, regardless of distance. It's essentially saying that friendship doesn't rely on geography. I have a friend who now lives in the UK, but for many years lived in both New Zealand and America. 1/2

Sky Patterns @skypatterns.bsky.social · 05/03/2025

Today I'm looking at tracks 5 & 6 on the album. Track #5 Shoreline I was invited to perform at a summer festival with a faintly hippy vibe, and came up with the idea for 'Shoreline' in the weeks leading up to the gig. I've never lived next to the sea, but my friend's parents used to own 1/3

Sky Patterns @skypatterns.bsky.social · 04/03/2025

Track #4 Northern Belle I came up with the idea of writing about childhood memories, because we can all relate to them. I've never actually seen the Northern Belle steam train, but I've certainly been on several old steam trains, and visited the National Rail Museum as a kid 1/2

Sky Patterns @skypatterns.bsky.social · 04/03/2025

Today, I'm looking at tracks 3 & 4 on the album. Track #3 You Are My World Essentially, this song is a story with a before and after. The first verse is more downbeat, whereas the second verse is optimistic and pure happiness.

Track #2 Chemical Reaction This song came together fairly quickly in July 2024. I was starting to work much more with a 'melody first' approach, rather than 'riff first', and the melody kind of popped into my head before I'd really even come up with the chords. 1/2

Sky Patterns @skypatterns.bsky.social · 03/03/2025

Track #1 The Beginning Long before the idea of recording an album even became a thought, I'd decided that if ever I should record an album that the opening track should be called 'The Beginning'. Not that the last track is 'The End'. 1/6
