These are too good. If I ever run across them in the wild they are mine.
Hornsea frog mugs, designed by John Clappison. The mug is kind of a swampy yellow and the frog is decorated in circles of various sizes. There’s also some kind of a bug on a flower let’s maybe a B but there’s a label obscuring it.A green mug that is decorated with a sinuous Lockness monster

Day 5! 🐡 I wanted bright colors instead of earth pigments today. And I fell in love with the owl & cat saltshakers I saw the other day that were designed by John Chappison. But I also am still obsessed with cave art. So it was mashup time.
A black ink European bison that is a mashup of Cave Art and mid-century geometric design influenced by John Chapman on a tie-dye cave wall in pink, purple, and teal. The artwork surrounded by the tools used to make it - a paintbrush, Qor watercolor paint palette, black zig mangaka ink pen, and polychromos color pencils. The artwork sitting on top of my sketchbook with drawn versions of the bison, a cave bear in that style as well as drawings of the original designs that influenced this work. There are three owls, a cat, two chickens, a fish and a horse.

Another thing I was happy with today is I finally looked up what you do with paper stumps/tortillions once you use them - how to clean and re-point them. It felt like a “duh” moment once I did but now I might actually use them.
Two paper stumps next to sandpaper & a small folded square of leather.

Seriously I was so happy with this. I wanted to run around screaming “I drew this! I did it!” and then was immediately scared that I will never draw anything that good again. 😆 But I’m definitely going to draw it again. I have an idea for an artwork incorporating something similar.
A closer look at the sketch of the sleeping European bison

Day 4! I kind of psyched myself out with my sketchbook work. I could not believe how well the sketch of the actual bison turned out and I kind of wanted to try to do that in the small pic but then I told myself there was no way I could shrink it down and make it look good at 3 1/2 inches.
Drawing of a European bison from cave art in Chauvet Cave, France. The artwork surrounded by the tools used to make it - watercolor and colored pencils. The artwork is sitting over the lower right corner of my sketchbook, which is open to a spread that has a few of the owls from yesterday, as well as another owl & the Makapansgat Pebble, color swatches and several sketches of bison cave art, as well as a color pencil drawing of an actual European bison laying down and sleeping.

It is neat to compare my picture from 11 years and almost a month ago!
Another photograph of Palo Duro Canyon looking from nearly the exact same spot. There is a ruined building down below that is much less gray than in Jason’s photo, and the sky has a haze but no defined clouds.

It is a rainy weekend & I wanted soup, but did not have the ingredients to make from scratch. But I dressed up a can of Chunky Pub Style Chicken Pot Pie soup with stuff I do have and it is really good.
A bowl of stew/soup in a blue and white bowl with a horn spoon sticking out of it. It is a creamy stew and bits of chicken, dumplings, and vegetables are visible.

Day 3! Love the owl from Chauvet, but it’s simple, so I needed to do something else, but did not find any other bird imagery that is not little blobs, & the birds I could find were tiny low detail pics. Combined Lascaux dots and birds & part of a motif from Cueva del Tajo de las Figuras in Spain.
3.5”x3.5” artwork of a cave art owl in sepia crayon with a line next to it. To the right of the line is some vaguely feather shaped black shapes and below those are 3 red bird shapes. Below all of them are yellow ochre blobs with black blobs on top of those. The artwork surrounded by my watercolor palette, favorite brush, and a black color pencil & lead holder with sepia crayon in it. The artwork lays on my open sketchbook where I sketched the owl in various colors and then doodled out the composition I wanted to use.

This is a pretty solid list, I could maybe replace Tori & Mezzanine, and possibly change out the Nanci & Indigo Girls albums with others from them.
3x3 grid of 9 albums covers, titled “My 9 Albums: the sound that made Skulleigh” on a walnut wood background. The albums are:
Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Joan Baez - self titled album

Nanci Griffith - Late Night Grande Hotel
Indigo Girls - Nomads, Indians, Saints
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Kesha - Rainbow

Back to the cave for day two of my October art everyday challenge. This is made after the cave bear skull that is placed on a rock in the middle of the very last chamber of Chauvet Cave in France. The actual cave does not have the handprints on the wall behind it. That is something I added. 🐡
Today’s little 3 1/2 x 3 1/2“ artwork is a little study of the cave bear skull in the last chamber of Chauvet Cave. It is a large skull sitting on a white rock in the middle of a cave, intentionally placed there by the hands of early humans. The art is all in shades of yellow ocher, Venetian red, and black. The cave wall behind has red handprints on it, and there are deep shadows cast by the light the viewer has brought with them. The artwork surrounded by the pencils and paints that I used to create itMy sketchbook open to a page where I practiced a bunch of cave bear skulls and made scribbles seeing how I liked various pencils and the artwork is sitting over top of the middle of the pagesAnd in progress shot of the first couple of layers of watercolor, surrounded by a mess of paint and pencils

Let’s see if I can maintain a streak this month. Definitely want to explore cave art themes, as well as nature & extinct critters. 🐡
A small 3.5x3.5 inch artwork of a cave bear painting, inspired by a bear painted in Chauvet Cave in France. Unlike the original, a photo of which is above it, it is surrounded by other cave art motifs of hands and dotsA view of the painting and the tools I used to draw and paint it. My sketchbook, where I drew a few attempts at the cave bear in graphite pencil and sanguine lead, next to the small artwork, and the photo of the original cave art.

Spent the evening making little guys.
Color pencil drawings of two Mesopotamian area idols. The one on the left is a parent-and-child eye idol, blueish stone with yellowish details. The one on the right is taller, terra-cotta-ish, hands clasped at its stomach, with a bird-like face and THICC legs.

Now she is one classy lady. I like her.
another stone eye idol. This one has a lot more detail and is a singular figure. It has the huge eyes at the top, but with little knobs at the side for either ears or maybe space buns. She also has a long triangular cone for a nose and pouty lips underneath it. below the mouth are two mounds to represent breasts surrounded by insized double lines arranged in diamond patterns. Below is a triangular prominence in size with a little line at the bottom and dots to represent the vulva.

Do not speak to me or my ancient Syrian son ever again
A screenshot of a auction site that sells historical artifacts. The page is for a “marble eye idol“ from Tell Brak, a city in ancient Syria. The idol is a flat piece that is composed of one figure with a head composed entirely of its eyes, so it ends up being sort of a figure 8 with eyes on it as the head, and then below it is another figure identical to it, but smaller as if it’s a child standing in front of a parent.

If anyone is curious why I found the bison patty disgusting but fascinating, here it is with a graphic label added. It is swirly and kind of scaled. Of *course* I photoed it, I am a naturalist! I have so many gross photos 😂
A photograph of a poo that is presumably from a bison. It is large and slightly flat and various shades of brown unsurprisingly. There are layers that are kind of like scales overlapping each other and three green bottle flies of some variety dining on it.

I went to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve yesterday, and it was gorgeous!
A gravel road stretches off to the horizon in the middle of the photograph. On either side, the prairie stretches away and the far distance there is a slight rise of a hill. The plants in the foreground are green with some yellow flowers, but as the photograph stretches away, you can see the russet seed heads of tall prairie grass as well as the green of plants. Above the sky is blue with fluffy white clouds scattered across.

"Everybody was cussing, but we said free Palestine, we said free Haiti, we said free the Congo," he continued. "We're representing queer folks, we're representing people experiencing genocide, displacement, you know what I mean? We're talking about content that's pro-Black, you know, explicitly.
So that's what I think made the difference. And that's why the profanity thing, I think, was just an easy way for them to get us to be silenced."

This quote gets more and more depressing to me as time goes on.
We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements-transportation, communications, and all other industries; agriculture, medicine, education, entertainment, protecting the environment; and even the key democratic institution of voting—profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
