Trivia #14: I sometimes notice how loud the mornings are with birds. New York sits under a major route that birds follow from north to south. But New York is not special. It is famous because so many people are out watching, and I am one of them. Sampling bias. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #12: In 2007 Greek yogurt was about 1% of US yogurt sales. A Turkish immigrant bought a shut-down Kraft plant in upstate New York two years earlier. By 2013 the category was over a third of the market, and about half by 2015. An S-curve from a place almost nobody knew. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #11: In 1820-50, religious idea contagion swept Upstate New York repeatedly and fast, partly thanks to mobility via the Erie Canal. So much so that the region was called the Burned-over District. Mormonism and Spiritualism both began near Rochester. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #10: The founder effect: when a population starts from a few individuals, their rare genes can spread. In 1941 an Army fence enclosed deer carrying a recessive gene for white fur. About 300 white deer now form the largest such herd on Earth, an hour from Rochester. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #8: Protecting one line can destroy the whole system. Niagara Falls is an hour west of Rochester. In 1965, a safety device shut down one power line near the Falls. Excess power spilled onto other lines, and their safety devices shut down, creating a cascade failure. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #7: The Internet runs on optical fibre, first made practical in the small town of Corning, NY in 1970. It kept 1% of light per km. The best glass of the day kept 1% per 20 m! That fibre opened the pathway to today's connected world. @complenet.bsky.social complenet.github.io/cfp.html

Trivia #6: Rochester is the birthplace of digital camera, built by Steve Sasson at Kodak in 1975. Kodak kept it in-house to protect film. But the shock was amplified and returned to erase its creator. A node can inject a small shock, but cannot control the propagation. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #3: Before percolation had a name, Flory formulated it for gel in 1941, 18y before random graphs (as far as I know!), showing how cross-links pile up until one cluster spans a bowl. Jell-O, so famous its name became a synonym for gel, was just 30 miles from Rochester. @complenet.bsky.social

Trivia #2: Rochester is one of the few cities that have abandoned subway systems. This subway was built on the abandoned Erie Canal that ran near downtown. An existing system (the canal) was repurposed to build a new system (the subway). @complenet.bsky.social complenet.github.io/cfp.html
