Ghost train but it's also a rollercoaster

Day six of what is definitely not a stroke but is just labyrinthitis, although 'just' barely measures it's upside-down whirligig dangerous funfair energy

Today's #31daysofgraves theme is unusual. These two gravestones are in the shape of millstones and are in the churchyard of All Saints, #Hertford. Unsurprisingly they are for a #millwright, Robert Fincher and his wife Elizabeth.

A semi-circular tombstone (who knows what lies beneath the soil) with a central hole made to look like a millstone. The inscription says "Elizabeth, Wife of Robert Fincher Millwright died the 18th July 1764 aged 60 years". In the foreground, grass, in the background the red-stone walls of the church.

Thank you for this,Lisa and I'm glad you're still enjoying it. I just received some royalties today and amazingly it's still selling. I know of a few people who re-read it especially, do please make yourself known - it's so cheering

One from the vaults! This week a selection of suitably spooky books for the dark season! And to start - Halloween Hauntings: Stories About the Most Ghostly Night of the Year (1985) edited by Peter Haining is an essential collection of eerie tales for October nights!

Dazzle camouflage was created during WW1 to protect British ships from German artillery - it works by making it difficult to estimate range of speed and heading. Edward Wadsworth supervised the design of of the camouflage patterns. This is his 'Dazzle Ships in Drydock,' from 1919

Another alarming Sunday text from my hospital - do I want to stay on the Wait List for surgery, reply yes or no? After only four weeks. WTF is this nonsense? Imagine pressing the no button by mistake 😞

Saw this Sundance jury winner and I'm a sucker for mountain films in general, and mountain farmers

A special screening of To Hold A Mountain, a documentary set in the awesomely beautiful landscape of Montenegro and attended last night in London by the actual farmers old and young

I was always convinced Lily Tomalin would be cast as Pat Highsmith, but seeing Helen Mirren in that drag gave me goosebumps as someone who had spent time with her

Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s Act 3 (2026) was the film yesterday, and as ever it's a joy to spend time with them. They nourish somehow, somehow mysteriously, and you always feel a slightly different person afterwards. How many filmmakers can you say that about?
