Thank you. Weirdly, a WTF from someone else about this is exactly what I needed today

It’s doing my head in too. Mum is sending me Rupert Lowe speeches and insisting he will make Britain better for her grandchildren who are 50% SE Asian. No words.

I recently re-read Consider Phlebas for fist time in 30 years and it felt like coming home. It really is extremely good.

My take, and it’s just a take: If you no longer endorse it or it is deprecated for something better then maybe remove it. If it’s just not your current bag - ie unsupported - leave it up. Somewhere in between: be transparent in the description.

Curiously there are some surprising thematic similarities regarding how they both end.

Pft, you sound like my Call of Cthulhu players asking me to run D&D 5e for a change! The real question is how many of your legion followers will pay to join a Patreon in order to watch it!

They are just hanging out on your land. Frogs will travel quite some distance from the home pond, toads - who are more resistant to desiccation - even further.

Pitch for a mini campaign: @thedicemechanic.bsky.social is an idealistic young lawyer in the Old World, fighting against the relentless injustices of the justice system from within. Watch him struggling, slowly overcome by the awfulness, try not to become what he despises.

From this she clearly identifies as “British Asian” not “English” but is wilfully ignorant of what logically follows from that amongst the far right. She absolutely is being racist against herself, incredible.

Nice, so we have consensus the WFRP Old World legal system objectives are: Primary: tool of oppression for the noble class. Secondary: ongoing success of the legal edifice and its stakeholders. Tertiary (at best): raising monies and efficiency.

So should we still set luck to 50% always? I kinda like the fact some people are luckier than others, it feels true and will change how people play…
110
Ray Irving 🇺🇦 @skiingmouse.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In WFRP Old World I’d expect the legal system to first and foremost be a tool of oppression for the noble class with efficiency being a tertiary objective at best

I’ll bite - example of an “irrational legal system” please?

Fairness, I’m guessing. Makes every luck roll a coin toss. I do agree with him, it feels right, but it’s not terribly relevant because I *do* allow luck spend.

I’m not a huge fan of GM less games but this setting tickles my fancy - I’ll totally pillage it for a Call of Cthulhu scenario

This somehow caused me to type “maggots eating time lapse” into YouTube search and the ensuing content is truly horrific! NB: you’d need more than 2,000 maggots to consume a human corpse.

That’s really interesting case of YMMV, too bad we didn’t do a read through together - would have been fun! I agree she *is* peevish but early on it’s generally in a good cause (abolition). What you see in her does however better support what happens in later seasons…

In a #callofcthulhu survival horror one shot my objective as Keeper is that only some should survive. This creates some iconic scenes and is a lot of fun for everyone (usually even the dead investigators). But it is not a *designated* survivor it’s a *lucky* or *resourceful* survivor(s).

In the books she was a favourite character because her story arc is so strong and has charisma, backbone and (against slavery) ethics. There were attempts to steal her dragons which she somehow manages to rebuff. Why would we not support her?

Apparently vanilla Star Destroyers are 1.6km long. By contrast the tip of the Gherkin to the Shard in London is 1.2km apart. So we can imagine one parked above London would be pretty impressive - see my scale sketch. In NYC it would cover 20 blocks. But YMMV....
A Star Destroyer over central London more or less to scale, its quite big.

Is there something wrong with the game or the book? [I have subsequently successfully run Teeth, which I believe is a derivative, and found that to be challenging also]

Same, I think this is a really powerful shot:

Yes. The point is generally that players only need to read up to a certain point in the book: introduction, lore, example of play, making characters, skill checks. The rest is for the GM - crunch including combat, running the game, character progression, example scenario, GM lore - and comes later.

@rpgaugust.bsky.social scenario #3 👆🏻 will be Castrum Primum (converted to Cthulhu Invictus in northern Britannia 117AD), a standout scenario in the Cohors Cthulhu Germania book. Did you have a syllabus or escalation ladder for the experiments? Any specific advice from the play tests?

4e’s problem was it only made sense if you already knew 1e. Weird stuff like armour being in a much later part of the book to combat. Lots of cross references. It was obtuse. If 5e fixes that, job done. Everything else can be house ruled.

Not exactly - it’s Eriador + coastal waters. I think we‘d need all the books (including forthcoming Gondor/Rohan and 1e Mirkwood), a large whiteboard and a free weekend to roll our own Middle Earth Quest™️

Tales from the Lone Lands *is* a campaign - so watching this space 🙂. You can of course pull one together yourself from the many scenario seed locations and NPCs, but obviously significant effort involved (just to read it all is no small matter).

Interested in your thoughts on this one. My main complaint on 3 rings is I couldn’t get a one or two shot out of it. However I did use The Island of the Sorceress very successfully in my Moria campaign.

Born in 1904 so he was too old to fly in combat (he retired as a pilot in 1931), during WWII he served as an instructor. Ended up stationed in Turkey. You sent me down a rabbit hole, here is his The London Gazette entry where he is listed as getting the AFC, but it does not say why:

This. I would sink into despair if I could not imagine I might actually read all my physical books one day! I have hardcopies of 1e and 4e so it only makes sense to get a pdf of 5e. Also my WFRP is a tainted amalgam of the 4e rules, my jumbled memories of 1e, and Call of Cthulhu 7e!!!

Talk about how you can live and act and pick your own adventure in horror films of various genres at any time in history - ancient Rome to modern day, cosmic horror through survival horror (not to mention Pulp horror)

That is very canny and I am realising if I’d DM’ed you “which 1980s White Dwarf modern day CoC scenario has chainsaws” you could have saved me from a time consuming rabbit hole!

[You should definitely dip and skip - too much content to catch up]. I really wanted to find a modern day #callofcthulhu scenario I remembered from 1980s White Dwarf with chainsaws. Finally tracked it down, was by Rowland
