Drawings from the last stream, celebrating the Philly Nude Bike ride that passed by yesterday. These are from a separate A5 660 page book made for practicing "direct drawing" in ballpoint pen with the hopes of improving at drawing improvisation. Ballpoint has proven to be easier to show on camera.

A sketchbook spread with ballpoint sketches of nude bike riders and notes from the artist. The masculine rider, Persimmon is a short but muscular lesser demon with a barrel chest and short limbs. He has a beard with no mustache and is celebrating on his seat, waving to an unseen audience as his cape billows in the wind. The feminine rider is HB, an anthropomorphic snail drawn with a notably fatter body than usual, with multiple shots of her on crudely drawn bikes mid pedal stroke.
The artist comments on the local nude bike ride and expresses interest in the higher number of black participants than expected, with a drawing of his mascot giving a thumbs up and giving "black guy approval".

From the current A5 sketchbook. Character sketches are drawn from the back of the book and progress towards the center to meet the studies pages in the front. Sketches from these sessions are of OCs of @inkjelly.art and @escapeclaus.art. #basicbear #hbsnail #nsfwoc

An open sketchbook, showing two pages of blue lined sketches depicting an exaggerated, top heavy muscular character standing around. The subject, Claus leSable, is tall and broad, with long thin legs holding up a barrel chest, thick arms and a Moai-like stone head. The left page explores Claus’s character design, with artist’s notes comparing him to the tall dancing figures in Ernie Barnes painting “The Sugar Shack.” Claus has a stern, hard to read facial expression and is holding a wine goblet tilted close to the chest. Several sketches show Claus from a worm’s eye view, using tricks of positioning to stand in for expressiveness. Some show a glint where an eye should be, shown when something has Claus’s attention. The right page tests drawing Claus’s whole body standing from a front view. The artist has annotated several sketches noting proportion mistakes and failures when capturing the character’s likeness. One drawing on this page stylizes Claus by assembling the character’s face and body out of stark, angular lines. The artist has marked this drawing as “Interesting!” and pursued the idea on the left page, leading to the Sugar Shack influence in Claus’s body shape.

A sketchbook spread with drawings of the gallery mascots of @blkmkt.net and @penbee.art, featuring both their SFW and NSFW mascots. From right to left are HB the Snail, a feminine anthropomorphic snail, Claus leSable, a masculine living statue with a Moai style head, Quill, a feminine anthropomorphic Bee and Apparition, a masculine ghost emanating from a frowning skull. These drawings show the mascots dressed for their jobs. HB and Claus are mostly nude (they are not safe for work) save for a helmet on HB to indicate blue collar work and a name tag on Claus to indicate white collar work. HB is shown operating machinery, wearing a high-vis vest and nothing else. An annotation for HB reads "Works at the 'how it's made' factory" and another for Claus reads "Works at 'Embezzlement incorporated'."
On the left page, Quill the Bee is dressed in a sharp suit with padded shoulders and a pencil skirt, to imply white collar work. She has four arms and is posed to show them off, with one drawing showing Quill enjoying a cup of coffee. Next to Quill is Apparition, who is wearing a tie and a helmet to perform blue collar tasks. One drawing shows him wiping a window with a sour look on his face.

A sketchbook spread with nude drawings of @inkjelly.art's gallery mascot HB the Snail and her boyfriend, Basic Bear. These drawings show HB, an anthropomorphic, feminine snail, casually eating what appears to be a snack bag labeled "rat poison". Basic, a muscular, masculine bear, is voicing his disapproval. A fun fact about snails reads "Snails love to eat rat poison" above a drawing of HB with a much fatter figure winking at the audience. More drawings imagine a BBW style HB, nude and glowing, with large sagging breasts. Along with fat HB are some bulked up Basics, showing a bodybuilder's physique wth extra fat, a double chin and more pronounced belly. Two drawings show each reacting to the other's fatter body with affection and lust, and two others show them at the gym. Basic is using a pec deck machine to do chest flys and HB is doing pushups, with Basic watching her form. They work out together.

Forgot to resize the previous sets of spreads! These should be much more reasonable to load. Not sure how many of these is reasonable to post here, might instead keep full archives of sketchbook pages in Patreon or something.

A sketchbook spread with construction drawings of the torso as seen from behind and above. The torsos are built of primitive shapes, an egg and a wedge for the ribs and torso, simple triangles for scapulae and cylinders for limbs, and have more specific muscular shapes draped over them. These drawings show the stretching action of the shoulders and pectorals as seen from behind when the arms are stretched above the head, forming a diamond shaped well where the neck, head and trapezius muscles are contained. The scapula is shown to be a triangle with its far point aimed at the base of the arm, which rotates when the arm is raised above the shoulder level. Smaller drawings build a schematic of a simplified arm, which the artist repeats on both pages to commit to memory. There are constructions of figures with breasts shown to fit on top of the pectoral shape with the appearance of a balloon pointing to the center of the collarbone. The largest drawing on the spread demonstrates the alignment of the scapulae at the back. These drawings are studies from Michel Lauricella’s Simplified forms.

A sketchbook spread with mostly headless and armless figure construction studies. These studies have legs attached and highlight where the legs attach to the pelvis. Special attention is paid to the S-curve the in the legs, starting at the Sartorius muscle in the thigh and continuing with the tibia down to the feet. Some figures have heads and demonstrate twisting motions in the torso, and some drawings isolate the legs. All drawings are from Michel Lauricella's Morpho: Simplified forms.

A sketchbook spread with studies focusing on the pelvis and legs. Construction drawings show where the legs attach, about halfway on the pelvis, and use a rectangular plane to stand in for the patella. Most poses are standing or vaulting poses, with one reclining pose, including a demo isolating she sartorius when the leg is extended. These and all other drawings in this set are from the Morpho: Simplified forms book.

A sketchbook spread with simple constructions of the whole figure, mostly focused on the head, trunk and legs. There is one seated figure with legs spread and bent that has arms attached, to demonstrate the position needed to hold the knees with a locked out arm. Most figures have bent knees and demonstrate the shape the sartorius makes as it crosses the leg - a diagonal curve from the center of the hips (as seen from the front) that ends somewhere under the knee.

Confining the study half of this sketchbook to this thread. 8 more pages from the beginning of the book.

A sketchbook spread with torso studies focusing on the connection the abs make from the ribcage to the pelvis. These are simplified constructions of the torso, studied from Michel Lauricella's Morpho: Simplified forms book. Both pages show the abs in flexion and extension, with a bucket shaped block in place of the pelvis. The abs extend from the middle of the front plane of the ribcage to the center of the front plane of the pelvis.

A sketchbook spread with torso construction studies. These studies rotate the constructed torso to show how the obliques connect the ribs and pelvis on the side plane. The drawings here also reinforce the construction of the arm beginning at the scapula on the back.

A sketchbook spread with multiple construction sketches of the torso as seen from behind. A sequence of drawings layer parts onto the construction of the torso, starting with a simplified showcase of the skull, spine, ribs and pelvis rendered with primitive shapes. Attention is paid to the back plane of the back of the body, emphasizing what parts belong to the back plane (Spinal erectors, scapulae, sacrum) vs which parts belong to the side plane (external obliques). The right page shows full figures from behind in reclining poses with rounded backs. The sketches on this page focus on the limbs stretching and how they attach to the torso at the hips and ribs.

A sketchbook spread with anatomy practice drawings. The left page is filled with figure construction drawings drawn from observation using quickposes.com's Warrior collection. The right page returns to drawing studies from Michel Lauricella's Morpho: Simplified forms, assembling torsos from more complex forms to demonstrate how muscle groups overlap on the side plane of the torso.

The strategy used for the current A5 sketchbook in progress to stave off fear of the blank page was to draw studies for improvement in the front of the book while drawing character artwork in the back. These are the first 8 pages of sketches in this book. This strategy fills out the book fast!

An open sketchbook showing practice drawings of hands on the left page and bodies without limbs on the right page. The left page's hand drawings are done quickly from observation in ballpoint ink. The hands overlap each other with diamond shaped lattices surrounding each hand, which the artist used to practice positioning each drawing with precision, keeping each diamond from touching another. The right page shows construction sketches of bodies without legs, showing how the hip connects to the ribs to form the trunk. The abdomen and obliques are marked with numbers 5 and 6 respectively, with 7 used to mark the spinal erectors where they are visible. The artist observes that the obliques and abs form an ice-cream-sandwich construction from most angles, with the spinal erectors forming the filling when shown from behind. Several figures also sit inside diamond shaped envelope shapes for the same positioning guidance as the hands on the left page.

Selected pages from the A5 book. Part of the work of this book happens when writing the alt text for its pages. A fringe benefit of doing this for the anatomy study portion (not shown here) is being forced to summarize what was learned in each session. Still learning how much detail is appropriate.

An open sketchbook, with rough layout drawings of two gendered variants of a normally non-gendered imp, Pok. Both pages are dominated by sketches of the feminine Pok. She is standing erect, legs spread wide, chest thrust high, and maniacally laughing. She is short, about three heads tall in one of the test drawings, with huge pointed ears like a bat’s, fluffy straight hair in single messy bang that normally peeks out of an oversized brimmed fool’s cap. She has the classic “shortstack” figure.
Contrasting with the feminine Pok, one drawing of her masculine counterpart show a taller, skinnier and more top heavy imp standing almost four heads tall. He has the same fluffy tuft of hair escaping a helmet with huge horns, with a ram like silhouette at the top of his head. His shoulders, arms and hands are bigger, wider and more defined than his bird chest, small hips, spindly long legs and thin neck. He wears a body suit with concentric circle motifs on the chest and shoulders, ending with a rolled turtleneck collar at the top and knee high steel-toed work boots at the bottom. He has a long tail that ends in a US style electrical plug. He is standing in a defiant and somewhat aggressive pose, as if provoking an attacker to approach.
Surrounding this one successful drawing are many abandoned, partially erased drawings of the same masculine Pok standing in a hunched over, shifty eyed pose looking at the viewer from behind him. Annotations mark drawings to pursue or abandon, with one hasty note showcasing opposing directions to orient the pointy features of both Pok variants. Fem Pok has ears that point up and hair that points down, where Masc Pok’s does the opposite. Peppered throughout the left page are headshots of the default, non-gendered Pok, showing an imp wearing a mushroom shaped cap, and in one case a similar cap flattened in a military beret shape.

A spread of two pages of gift sketches. On the left page, studiotrue.bsky.com's characters, a fan Reploid Pico and an anthropomorphic mink whose name wasn't provided. Pico is a feminine gynoid with a Megaman X style body plan, and she is hinged at the hip in a flirty pose. She is drawn to make it clear she is a black woman.
The mink character has a Sonic the Hedgehog style facial construction, with a rubenesque figure. She has a ponytail as wide as her head at shoulder length and a large, fluffy bang as well as an even larger fluffy tail, about the length of her body. She is flashing a toothy grin at an unseen subject to her right, briefly lowering her smartphone to look.
On the right page, multiple rejected sketches of ghostgribht.bsky.social's Markus Mallard, a muscular anthropomorphic duck. The page is filled with unsuccessful sketches of Markus’s head and torso. They should evoke the huge frame of Street Fighter 3’s Alex Winger combined with the simplified long head and neck of a duck combined in a rectangular shape with a beak. The figures instead lack proper structure, making Markus look too long or too thin.

If you instead need to work in a book, you could use a Camera Lucida of some kind, like the Etchr Mirror or NeoLucida (neolucida.com), but this is a little more complex to improvise on one's own.

Product photo showcasing an artist using an Etchr Mirror rig, comprising a plastic angled stand for holding a phone and a notch for a transparent acrylic sheet. The image on the phone screen is reflected onto the angled acrylic sheet, which the artist looks through in order to trace the phone image onto paper.

Photo of an artist using a Camera Lucida to trace a vase of flowers at a distance onto an open page of a sketchbook. The device is a prism attached to a flexible monopod about an arm's length away from the working surface. The artist looks into the prism and sees a projected image of the flower vase on the sketchbook and traces it. The tool pictured is the NeoLucida XL.

Pages from the latest sketchbook, a thick A5 book with 660 pages. The strategy for this book has been to do drawing study in the front of the book and character art in the back to help overcome blank page anxiety. #sketch #art #nsfwoc #basicbear #hbsnail #furry #persimmon #prickle

An open sketchbook showing two pages of nude character sketches and assorted notes about them. The left page is full of erotic practice sketches of HB, a feminine, anthropmorphic snail. Sketches include different views of HB laying prone while craning her head up to look at someone in front of her, with focus on her back and butt, as well as a few of her laying supine, hanging off of a bed, with focus on her hanging breasts. One rough sketch shows HB supine, licking the base of her boyfriend's testicles while he is in a prone position on top of her.
The right page comprises practice drawings of Persimmon the Lesser, a horned demon with a chubby build. The drawings focus on Persimmon's defining his proportions and attempting to pose him while keeping those proportions intact.

An open sketchbook showing two pages of nude character sketches. The left page focuses on Prickle the Cactusmaid, a tall, thin, feminine character with a circular cactus for a head. The page contains layout drawings of her torso with diagrams describing the form of her abs and shoulders, shown as if her arms were translucent. The right page contains drawings of Persimmon the Lesser, a horned demon with a dad bod, with many drawings of him from the front to see what proportions work best for the character.

An open sketchbook showing two pages of exploratory character drawings. The left page comprises many facial expression tests of a feminine anthropomorphic snail, HB the snail, with some bust drawings and thumbnails for illustration ideas. The right page shows similar expression and acting shots of HB's boyfriend, Basic the Bear, an anthropmorphic bear. One faint sketch shows Basic in a prone position with his hips raised suggestively and his eyes focused behind him.

Keeping several sizes of sketchbook helps with concentration while traveling. The usual collection consists of two pocket sketchbooks, two A5s and an A4 book, but recently added B5s in the rotation. SFW & NSFW are separated, hence the number of books. #sketch #clauslesable #basicbear #hbsnail

Photo of an open pocket sketchbook filled with studies of Basic the Bear's face and skull. Basic's head and neck form a simple sausage shape with interruptions from his snout, ears and angular sideburn tufts depending on how he's positioned in a scene, and the artist has attempted to understand what underlying structure would consistently yield this result.

Photo of a pocket sketchbook open to a spread of sketches of the artist's NSFW mascot, Claus leSable. leSable is a living statue with a Moai style head and is depicted nude but featureless on these pages. These page focus on tilting the character's neck and minor reclined actions.

Several sketches of a nude anthropomorphic bear named Basic, with half a page of annotated busts in blue and black pencil. The sketches constitute a character study, with most attempts rejected in scribbled annotations.

Have been away from digital art for a while, to focus on becoming comfortable thinking visually again. Sketch pages tend to be drawn with H4-6 pencils or whatever is handy, so they are difficult to properly photograph. [ #nsfwoc #sketch #clauslesable #prickle #persimmon ]

Photograph of an artist's sketchbook held open to its first spread with a transparent blue clip. Both pages are filled with light sketches of this artist's mascot, a living, muscular statue, Claus leSable. The left page focuses on the character's face from various angles, with annotations to note which sketches capture the character's likeness best. The right page focuses on the character's stature, with several inset ink drawings of the character's face. Claus's face resembles a Moai with a neutral expression and eyes always under a cast shadow.

Photograph of the artist's sketchbook, open to a page filled with rows of bust drawings. There are two characters depicted; a round-headed anthropomorphic Cactus woman, Prickle, and a chubby faced lesser demon, Persimmon. The two characters are facing the viewer but looking over their right shoulder in most of the sketches. This sketchbook page works to establish the layout of decorations on both characters' heads - Prickle has a roughly spherical head lined on its side planes with three large spikes and a large flower forming a ponytail-like shape at the back. She has a big, round circle for a nose, like a Koala. Persimmon has messy tufts of hair at the top of an otherwise pointy and bald looking head, with a set of horns fused onto a single ring connecting both of his temples.

Photograph of an artist's sketchbook focused on one character, Persimmon the lesser demon. He is nude on this page, with one arm at his side and one outstretched at the shoulder, both hands semi-prone like an anatomy model. He has a bell shaped head with features small and centered on his face. His beard and goatee are connected and angular, but are missing a mustache. He is otherwise short, squat and hairy, with a set of horns extending from his temples and merging together at the back to form a ring behind his head, framed by enormous pointed demonic ears. One sketch compares the formation of his horns to the silhouette of a receding hairline. All sketches are annotated with the artist's notes on what needs to be emphasized on this character.
