Exactly! I can't imagine what it does to someones self esteem to be treated like a hollow shell not even worthy of a simple "how is your day?" To not be treated like an autonomous human being who gets to participate in their own healthcare. Many techs talk to the COs & not them. It makes me mad.

Memory seared into my mind forever: I saw that one of my incarcerated patients had a birthday the next week. When I went back into the room, I said "You have a birthday coming up! The big 3-0!" and he gave me the biggest grin and said "Yes it is! Thank you for noticing."

One time I asked an incarcerated patient how his day was going and the CO with him responded to the question instead because he assumed I was talking to him. I said, "Oh, I was actually talking to my patient." Like y r u assuming I wouldn't be speaking to the patient I am LOOKING AT.

Like, I go out of my way to be over the top nice to my incarcerated patients because half the time people don't even talk to them, they talk to the COs like they aren't even there. Like they aren't the patient.

my program sent out an email urging my fellow radiography students to treat incarcerated patients with "as much kindness as any other patients" and it genuinely shocked me because I thought everyone was being nice to incarcerated patients. I can't fathom why you wouldn't be.

(also, there were nearly 3 decades in b/w when the person was hurt and when the person I know wanted to become a deacon, which at this small church, was just someone who helped make executive decisions for the church & greeted people at the door. He wasn't posting thinkpieces very visibly online.)

I say this story to explain that to me, THIS is what I imagine as rehabilitation. Someone who thinks about their actions still, never makes excuses, and steps back if it would upset the people who they hurt.

When this person wanted to become a deacon at a small church, they wanted to ask permission from the family of the person who they hurt before they took a church leadership position. The family said that it was fine, but if the family had said no, I think that would have been justified.

For instance, someone I know committed a non-violent crime many decades ago & someone accidentally got hurt (which was not this person's intention but doesn't justify it). They served time and have social consequences still to this day, because people in the community know what happened.

My take on the Jacob Geller thing as an SA survivor and a UNC alum is that sure, we can have conversations about rehabilitation, etc. But I also think that you are not owed a platform after that comes out. I don't want to see your face. I don't care about your opinions.

Yeah honestly I'm not sure. I know that some imaging modalities like sonographers need to be able to know what they're looking *for*, because otherwise they won't get the correct image, but I guess with us maybe they just want to make sure if we see a break, cancer, etc to include ALL of it

We take a pathology course in school where we learn to definitely see breaks, poor healing, other injuries and we can note them to ourselves in our brain but otherwise (at least in the US) we aren't allowed to say anything to the patient

It's actually out of our scope of practice as radiographers technically! We aren't allowed to convey any image analysis, that's up to radiologists
