#LitHodgepodge 14 I think sometimes I am overly sparing with my figurative language, tending towards the blunt and punchy. But this is from a deeply emotional moment and uses a combination of metaphor and simile to convey the conflicting feelings.
Unbidden, or at least unconsciously bidden, flames began to dance across her clenched fists, bright in the dim tunnels. And for just an instant, she could see what she would do to him, so clear that she could taste it, feel it, smell it.
It was the smell that stopped her cold. She would never forget the sickly-sweet stench of burning flesh, never forget the first time… Tendrils of fear constricted her heart like a vice, strangling the anger, crushing it into nothingness. The flames died instantly.

#WIPSnips Teamwork! Here we have Turnip, Grilled, and Garlic teaming up to make a potion for Cookie, which she needs to save Shallot (the potion is *for* Cookie, but will give her the focus and stability she needs to save Shallot)
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

Turnip was asked to help in the alchemy lab when they needed her cold breath to chill one of the potions. She didn’t know its name, but whatever potion Grilled was making on Cookie’s orders required being frozen solid first.
The solid piece was black in color, with streaks of cobalt blue and a striking magenta. Moreover, it was colder than ice—so cold that Turnip had to hold it because Grilled’s fingers couldn’t touch it without a feeling like frostbite shooting up his arm.
Cookie instructed them to break the frozen substance into smaller chunks, add it to a jelly-like substance Garlic had made between the occasional stir, put it all in a wooden bowl, and give it to her quickly.
The whole time, Turnip and Grilled thought they were making a potion for the innmaster, but when they brought the bowl over to Cookie, she thanked them and dug her mandibles into it.
Turnip blinked. “Uh, um, would yeh like a spoon?”

#LitHodgepodge I created the Good Thyme Inn to be an archetypal D&D-style inn where one might form a party and go on adventures. Of course, it's not quite like that because I'd already created my setting but the similarities are there in spirit and vibes. And I guess adventures DO happen sometimes😁

An October Prompt Game of Miscellaneous Proportions

TUESDAY TROPES

[Graphic of an old man wanderer, with a sack on his back and a long walking stick, and a black cat]

Prompt:
13 | Tell us about an archetypal setting in your WIP. What is it, and how does it function in the story? How do you utilize, and possibly subvert, expected patterns? Feel free to share a snip.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Examples of archetypal settings range from the broadly symbolic, such as the maze, the garden, or the wasteland, to more genre-specific tropes, like the tavern in fantasy novels or the small town with a dark secret in thrillers.
