Meta asks some workers to become managers

The tech giant is offering voluntary leadership roles to employees in its artificial intelligence division. The move partially reverses a recent push to eliminate middle management and create flatter teams.

Moral equality is something relational societies struggle with. They tend to be more restrictive and more exclusionary. It’s nice to imagine a world where everyone is satisfied to be simply a good spouse or parent or friend, but that’s not how these things work in practice. When our dignity depends on our membership in a group, we start to police who else can join and what happens when they do. When humans get relational, we get clannish.

This brings us back to what we already know: The modern labor market has dissolved the bonds of tradition, family, and clan. In the modern world, relationships matter less. And because they matter less, we can do much more inside them. They are freer. They have room to breathe.

Preach brother
I spent a lot of time in clubs in my 20s and 30s. This was instrumental in defining my career outside of that space. I think we are all trying to work too much. Stop it. I regularly tell people around me that they shouldn’t work so hard when they are young. Being young in a city is made for fucking off. go fuck off. If you are not young, then fuck off anyway.

The FT is challenging my breakfast today I just made an audible "ew" reading this
In her former career as an estate agent, Vanessa Martin says her team of eight female colleagues experimented with assigning tasks according to their cycles.

Sales and outreach were given to those in the first half of their cycle, when peaking oestrogen and testosterone can mean “higher energy” and better “communication skills”. Administrative and deep work were allocated in the latter half, when “the calming hormone” progesterone brings lower energy and, for some, a greater propensity for focused, solitary work.

Screenshot from an article in the ft with the text: It's very normal to see people who seem to be ageing really well and then you find they actually have lots of tweakments done really subtly," she adds.

This bit also led to some idle thoughts, such as, "how much do we honestly think we can build evals to really control for this in all the cases we care about enough to truly delegate accountability"
Drucker suggests that

Procedures can work only where judgment is no longer required, that is, in the repetitive situation for whose handling the judgment has been already supplied and tested. Our civilization suffers from a superstitious belief in the magical effect of printed forms. And the superstition is most dangerous when it leads us into trying to handle the exceptional, non-routine situation by procedure.

Modern AI too is surrounded by superstitious beliefs about magical effects, and tends to fail when it encounters exceptional situations.

When street-level algorithms encounter a novel or marginal case, they execute their pre-trained classification boundary, potentially with erroneously high confidence.

Musical AND business genius here; Alamo Drafthouse Cinema but for the symphony
“We were thinking it could be nice to make that kind of a restaurant-style thing, so people can also go sit up there and eat and watch the concert,” she continued. I asked her if that would distract from the music. “It depends on the food, I think,” she answered. “If it’s like a big steak that you have to focus on and dig into, maybe not. But if it’s light tapas, finger food, little bites, I think then it is easier. Little grilled cheese bites could work so nicely, or chicken nuggets.”

I realize I risk revealing the depths of my own ignorance but... 4 MILLION men?!?!?!?
Those were desperate years. The storm center then was in Russia, where the German army was hurling attack after overwhelming attack at the Soviet lines. To this day, most Russians think World War II was something that happened primarily in their country and the battles everywhere else in the world were a sideshow. In August 1943, for instance, in the hilly countryside around the city of Kursk (about 200 miles south of Moscow), the German and Soviet armies collided in an uncontrolled slaughter: more than four million men and thousands of tanks desperately maneuvered through miles of densely packed minefields and horizon-filling networks of artillery fire. It may have been the single largest battle fought in human history, and it ended -- like all the battles on the eastern front -- in a draw.

Karp thinks he is destroying bureaucracy. He is encoding it. The contempt for meetings and weekly reports and presentations to senior leaders; he treats these as the bureaucratic process itself. They were not. They were where people interpreted the procedure, the place where someone could notice that the categories no longer fit the case. The targeting doctrine is still there. The rules of engagement are still there. They are the columns on the Kanban board. What Karp eliminated was the discretion the institution could never admit it depended on, and what he got was a bureaucracy that runs exactly as written. Encoded bureaucracy does not bend. It shatters.
