Now I am still and plain: no more words. Rilke tr Barrows & Macy #poetrysunday

From Book of Hours

I come home from the soaring in which I lost myself.
I was song, and the refrain which is God is still roaring in my ears.
Now I am still and plain:
no more words.
To the others I was like a wind:
I made them shake.
I'd gone very far, as far as the angels, and high, where light thins into nothing.
But deep in the darkness is God...

One of many stunning/crushing/beautiful love poems to God from Rilke’s Book of Hours #poetrysunday

Tr Macy & Barrows

She who reconciles the ill-matched threads of her life, and weaves them gratefully into a single cloth-
it's she who drives the loudmouths from the hall and clears it for a different celebration
where the one guest is you.
In the softness of evening it's you she receives.
You are the partner of her loneliness, the unspeaking center of her monologues.
With each disclosure you encompass more and she stretches beyond what limits her, to hold you.

(What on earth are they talking about? Oh, wondering what they are talking about.) The Wings of the Dove, Henry James

wishing to make him recognise. He had expressed ten minutes before his need to understand, and she was act-ing, after all, but on that. Only what he was to understand was no small matter; it might be larger even than as yet appeared.

(My plan is to time travel and review this all with William and Alice and tease Henry behind his back)

The Wings of the Dove is ~like a Chuck Close. Henry James delineates small spaces & then sculpts them with exquisite color, light & form, & then your mind sews all the spaces together.

Jasper Johns (!) by Chuck Close. Dc natl gallery . Portrait of elderly man scowling made if sections of color and abstraction

I believe Henry’s process is similar. His style is very abstract and process driven. He knows what he is doing in each small section even as he wonders into abstraction and not defining something exact. And he lets your mind build story

I’m assuming we are now to call Giovanni Bellini Gianbellini, who is equal to a parish feast, an autumn sunset, or Titian

The Wings of the Dove. James

Venice scene

“She had expressed as yethe could feel it as felt among them all—no such clear wish to go anywhere, not even to make an effort for a parish feast, or an autumn sunset, nor to descend her staircase for Titian or Gianbellini.“

Ouch the words enjoy & reality. James’ The Wings of the Dove

spared him had he not brought it on himself. No man, she was quite aware, could enjoy thus having it from her that he was not good for what she would have called her reality. It wouldn't have taken much more to enable

At Table 1893 Edouard Vuillard at the Met. This Monday blend in & just be. (Thinking of Band of Horses too, every occasion be ready for a funeral)

The 3 people at table sort of blend in w wall and table and everything interconnected

“Vuillard is best known for his small, poetic, and dimly lit intimiste interiors of the 1890s. The setting of these works were the modest Parisian apartments that the artist shared with his sisters and his mother, and from which the latter operated her corset-making business. The two women depicted here are in mourning for the family's matriarch, grand-mère Michaud. It has been suggested that the young man is Julien Mangnin, a friend of Vuillard's from their school days, who dropped in to cheer up the women.”
