My latest for @newscientist.com
Panel 1
A delivery bot on a suburban path says
“You don’t always end up where you expect”
Panel 2
“It’s silly but I saw myself beside an astronaut rolling across a strange new world” it says as it continues down the path. An alert reads “50m to destination”
Panel 3
A had has opened the lid of the bot and taken out a paper bag.
“I like to feel useful. Nobody likes a cold hamburger”
Panel 4
It continues “So I give every mission my all”
The alert says “mission complete”
Panel 5
The sun is setting. The bot looks tired. The alert says it’s power is 3%
Panel 6
Night. Stars twinkle. The bot is parked in a lot with three others, it has its eyes closed and says “in my dock I dream of space”

Title: The Cyclops discusses his part in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Panel 1.
The cyclops wanders across his island, talking to the audience
"Most directors these days just use computers, so I appreciate that chris sailed the entire crew to a mythical island to shoot my scenes on film."

Panel 2.
He continues as he climbs the hill.
"I wasn't going to do it: The young people are all so down on cannibalism. But I called up Homer and he said "Are you an idiot? This is Hollywood money, not poetry royalties!"

Panel 3.
He sits on a rock and looks out to sea.
"So I got to meet Matt Damon, which was cool."

Send Help is a slightly more subdued Sam Raimi film until the last 20 minutes. But the entire thing is held together by McAdams giving great "is she kooky or batshit insane" with O'Brien being a great snivelling dipshit. Best to view it as a monster movie where they keep switching the monster role.

Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

A young maiko (apprentice geisha) gazes across the waters of Kyoto’s karyūkai ("flower and willow world"), Japan, in this mid-20th-century monochrome photograph.
Her silhouette centers on the elaborate wareshinobu coiffure—sculpted from her natural hair and anchored with a dappled silk pad (kanoko)—from which a delicate cluster of seasonal silk floral hairpins (kanzashi) cascades. Draped in a long, trailing hikizuri kimono patterned with delicate plum blossoms (ume), her posture is dominated by the monumental darari no obi—a heavy brocade sash tied in a grand, suspended knot that trails toward the stone floorboards, its lower hem embroidered with the crest (kamon) of her okiya (geisha house).

Captured during the post-war revitalization of Kyoto’s traditional arts districts—such as Gion Kobu or Ponto-chō—the photograph documents the living heritage of Japan's classical performing artists. Unlike fully fledged geiko, whose attire shifts toward understated, mature sophistication, the maiko’s wardrobe is an exuberant celebration of youth, defined by sweeping sleeves (furisode), high-standing collars, and the theatrical length of the dangling obi, which often measures over five meters in length. The dramatically dropped collar reveals the pristine, white-painted nape of her neck (erimoto), framed by two unpainted skin-toned strips (eri-ashi)—a classical hallmark of sensuous refinement in Japanese aesthetic history.

Aesthetically, the composition is a profound study in miegakure (the art of hide-and-reveal). By concealing her face, the photographer redirects total attention to the sculptural geometry of the woven brocade, the delicate curve of the exposed neck, and the quiet rhythm of the canal. The reflective, ripple-marked surface of the river functions as an expansive field of yohaku (active negative space), balancing the dense, intricate patterns of her attire.
