I use AI as an editing and organizational tool while preparing this project. It’s helped me work through 37 years of campaign material and revise portions of this Kickstarter page. Early in the project, when I thought I was making something only for my home table, I also used some AI-generated images as developmental reference art. Those images have been removed from the current Explorer Edition and the current **World of Styria: The Common Chronicle** manuscript. The setting itself comes from my campaigns, handwritten notes, maps, and other material created over decades of play. The finished book will use commissioned human-created illustration and professional cartography.

Do you have the consent of owners of the works that were (or will be) used to produce the AI generated portion of your projects? Please explain.

Yes. The AI-assisted work has been based on my own World of Styria material and the instructions I provided while developing the project. I created and own the underlying World of Styria setting material used for that work. I haven’t intentionally provided someone else’s copyrighted artwork or writing for the purpose of copying or imitating it. Where World of Styria uses material owned by another creator or licensor, those rights and permissions are handled separately.

A statblock for the White Widow, a powerful boss adversary in Dowager: The Sacred & Strange. Its description reads:

Tier 3 Huge Ascendant Chimera. The White Widow is the most blessed and revered of Martyrs, born from the marriage of a devout maiden’s upper body to an armored, bio-mechanical abdomen with six spider-like legs. Unlike most of her peers, the White Widow is free to roam High Calia’s ruin, blindfolded and unspeaking, trusting in her prior faith to guide her through the megastructure to wherever something wicked needs to be eviscerated.

Sometimes, the White Widow will dance in the wilds with a cadre of chanters and revelers who may seek to one day follow her example. Though she is silent and docile, they insist they can her her speak. Beyond this frolicking, the Imperial Church only looks for one of its widows to ensure her heavy anti-materiel rifle is still functional.

Dowager has tight rules, flexible character creation, fast-paced, tactical combat, and a rich, fun setting.

Unlike most tactically oriented TTRPGs, I never got bored or checked out when it wasn't my turn. Clean rules, simple math, and popcorn initiative keeps the fights moving. Even with a large party there are never long stretches of waiting. You can even get multiple encounters done in one session.

The setting is a stand-out feature for me. It's a sci-fantasy world where magic and technology are fully integrated with no real line of demarcation between them. It pulls from multiple sources of inspiration, but without becoming some spongey, gutless pastiche. Rather, the varied threads are woven together into something that stands on its own. I can taste some Phantasy Star in here, but it's transformed by the presence of other flavors. Thematically, Dowager touches on the loneliness and alienation of social media, the rise of techno-feudalism, and deindustrialization. It's not all gloom and doom, though. The PCs are equipped to punch back, the art is vibrant, and the writing has a sense of humor to keep things from becoming a dour slog.

Character options are juicy and speak directly to the setting; there's nothing generic here. Background abilities are rich, impactful, and can drastically change how your character plays. Combat classes dole out techniques in chunks, but can be mixed-and-matched freely, resulting in a flexible system that is as complex as the player wants without inducing choice paralysis.

If you enjoy sci-fantasy, play Dowager. If you enjoy tactical combat, play Dowager. If the news makes you wish you could smash your computer and howl at the moon, play Dowager. Play Dowager.

Finally, as I mentioned above, the Professor's nom-de-plume is all over this thing. Not counting the "About Us" section, his name is mentioned sixteen times, each with an air of breathless awe. It's in the title of the backerkit, the blurb, the Ultimate Dungeon Terrain is Professor DM's Ultimate Dungeon Terrain, designed by Professor DM himself! That particular phrase "by Professor DM himself", appears no fewer than eight times. It reeks of theme park podcasts where you have to use the full legal name of the attraction to stop things from becoming genericized. It's a bad look is what I'm saying.

Sorry your stuff isnt (and never will be) popular and isnt one of the top 20 so you will never ever get mentioned beyond your self promo that you want to shove into everything you say. But maybe if you were half as serious as you claim you are you'd figure out how to handle promo without polluting subreddits that arent looking to be billboards?

Tonight I'm working on banging out the remaining trinket tables I've gotta fill for #dowagerrpg. Someone once shared advice on here to come up with categories you can keep coming back to ("a weapon", "a belt", etc) when writing tables. Here's my cheat sheet of categories for all my trinkets.

Fear & Hunger is a really popular indie horror game that blew up in the last few years. In terms of explicit content, it's pretty extreme- I pitch it to folks as a game with essentially "all the content warnings", but the description on its steam store page uses fairly plain, matter of fact language

Fear & Hunger is a horror dungeon crawler set in the dark and hopeless dungeons of fear and hunger. The game is a hybrid of survival horror and dungeon crawler genres with its influences ranging from Silent Hill to Nethack. There are roguelike elements to the game as well as a heavy foundation of a j-RPG.

I've often talked about a "Make it Make Sense" rule when I'm explaining #dowagerrpg to people, and recently I've finally put it into words. I feel like this approach to character options in a game is so much more fulfilling than dumb shit like "medium armor proficiency" or "requires 16 INT"

Make it Make Sense

The freedom to pick and choose Traits for your Companion regardless of Type comes with the responsibility to make it make sense in the fiction. It’s not unreasonable, for instance, for a Humanoid-type Magician to acquire the Blade Ward Trait associated with Spirits: You could just think of this as your ally learning a new spell.

It may seem strange for a Beast-type War Dog to acquire the Soul Sludge Trait associated with Outsiders: A dog cannot normally learn to cast spells, but there is no issue with this combination if you choose to think of your Companion as an otherworldly hellhound bound to their master, or an ordinary dog corrupted by exposure to occult magicks.

If a combination of Traits seems nonsensical, talk to your friends at the table about ideas on how to make it work. If the combination still seems too jarring for your liking, then simply choose different Traits.

As a game, Dowager is not interested in establishing an arbitrary system of pre-requisites and legal combinations of character options outside the most bare necessities.
