German trade economist Julian Hinz certainly has a clear take on the Franco-German push, which I have included in today’s cover story of The Kelvin Report. If you want to stay up to speed on European energy, industrial or climate policy, The Kelvin Report is for you.

The EU Commission expects certificates from Direct Air Carbon Capture and Sequestration (DACCS) to be “extremely expensive”, as I cover in the latest issue of The Kelvin Report. And that immediately reminded me of an analysis by the German Öko-Institut from July 2026.

Reporting on podcast episodes can feel a bit strange at times. But the format becomes interesting for the news business when powerful people speak at length and uninterrupted, saying things in a conversational atmosphere that you might not have previously heard expressed with such clarity. 🧵👇

For me, this immediately brought to mind that Germany, as the EU’s largest economy, is currently blowing through another €2.5bn on a “fuel discount” that subsidises petrol and diesel. Nothing here is targeted – wealthy heavy drivers benefit significantly. Sign up to The Kelvin Report:

That money could instead be spent right here in the EU — on electric vehicles, heat pumps, or power grids, for instance — and flow directly into European jobs, factories, and industrial products as well.

Sinan Reçber @sinanrecber.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
A thought on sourcing international credits: amid the Industrial Accelerator Act, many push for EU money to support EU jobs, factories, and products. Buying international credits on a massive scale later contradicts this by sending billions abroad.

The climate analysts have also calculated the likely carbon price for the counter-proposal put forward by EU lawmaker Peter Liese (EPP) regarding the ETS 1 reform. Under his plan, the 2040 price would sit at 650 euros per tonne of CO2.

Sinan Reçber @sinanrecber.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
In a scenario where the EU achieves only 50% of targeted carbon removals (125Mt) and 50% of international carbon credits, KOBiZE calculates that the 2040 carbon price would hit €834/tonne, “at which the market does not clear and the cap is not met”, you can read in The Kelvin Report.

Climate analysts for the Polish government are warning of a major bottleneck in the ETS 1 reform. A shortage of carbon removals and international carbon credits could lead to a bottleneck in CO2 allowances in the EU after 2035, warns KOBiZE in a new analysis. 🧵👇

Not to suggest that the EU should install as much power generation capacity as China—that would likely be expensive, inefficient, and unrealistic. But simply to get a feel for how China's energy targets compare to the corresponding numbers in the EU.

⚡ China's Energy Targets vs. EU Energy System The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) recently summarised and analysed the energy targets in China's 15th Five-Year Plan (FYP). And I thought it’d be interesting to cross-reference those metrics with energy figures from the EU. 🧵👇

Both the EU Commission and many MEPs keep trying to push the message that Europe's reliance on fossil fuel imports is behind the energy price crisis. I constantly ask myself whether that's actually landing with people — or if it's just triggering sheer anger and frustration. 🧵👇
