👉🏻 A safer digital world for children means recognising this complexity and ensuring the responsibility does not fall on parents alone, but is shared through stronger policies, accountable platforms, resilient schools and supportive communities.

Documentaries like this humanise what research shows us: that online risks intersect with trust, family, and identity in ways that statistics alone can’t capture.

📌 Platforms ensuring real transparency and reporting mechanisms. 📌 Communities and policymakers building trauma-informed responses when harm occurs.

It’s a reminder that online protection cannot rest on any one safeguard. We need layered systems of support: 📌 Parents and carers creating open, trusting conversations. 📌 Schools embedding digital resilience into everyday education.

The new Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish makes this painfully clear. While most parents are vital allies in safeguarding children online, this story reveals that harm can also come from within the family itself.

Bir araştırma “bilimsel” ya da “resmî” olduğu için değil, etik değerlere, çocuk haklarına ve gönüllülük esasına uygun olduğu sürece meşrudur.

Birleşmiş Milletler Çocuk Haklarına Dair Sözleşme, özellikle aşağıdaki maddelerle bu duruma ışık tutar: - M 12: Çocuğun görüşüne saygı gösterilmesi; çocuk, kendisini etkileyen her konuda görüşlerini ifade etme hakkına sahiptir. Ancak bu, yaşa uygun bilgiyle ve baskı altında olmadan sağlanmalıdır.

"ai ethics" has been completely captured by industry. its not a literature that is relevant to the study of ethics, it has basically no connection to philosophical literature. it has a _lot_ of connections to (and funding from!) the tech industry, and has no ability or interest in challenging it

There were millions of people in Türkiye who could have described these protests accurately. You could have even asked a student who took part in them. But no, instead, you chose a novelist accused of plagiarism and known for supporting the establishment the protests are against. @financialtimes.com

👉🏻 How do we rethink digital literacy, address the gendered nature of #onlineradicalisation, and create real-world interventions that support young people before they fall into harmful ideologies?

As professionals working across media, education, and policy, we must ask: 👉🏻 How can we create spaces for young people (esp. young men) to find purpose, connection, and belonging outside toxic online influences?

Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 17/03/2025
We cannot afford to keep labelling this as a “#youthproblem” or an “#internetproblem.” #Adolescence makes it clear - this is a societal issue, and the time for meaningful change is now.

But where #BabyReindeer dissected obsession and trauma, #Adolescence forces us to confront the fragility of identity in a digital age.

The comparisons to #BabyReindeer are inevitable - both are visceral, boundary-pushing pieces of television that expose unsettling truths.

Rather than resorting to #moralpanic, the series offers an unflinching yet empathetic exploration of male rage, #socialmedia influence, and the real-world consequences of disaffection.

From online #echochambers to societal pressures that both demand strength and suppress emotion, #Adolescence lays bare the forces pulling young people - especially young men - toward harmful ideologies.

The narrative follows the aftermath of a teenage girl’s murder, with a 13-year-old boy as the prime suspect. Through chillingly realistic storytelling, the series unpacks the #toxicinfluences shaping young #masculinity today.

With stellar performances - particularly from newcomer Owen Cooper - and a bold single-take filming approach, #Adolescence forces us to confront a deep societal issue: the alienation of young men.

👉🏻 This decision isn’t just a setback. It’s a wake-up call. Effective content moderation and fact-checking safeguard free speech by protecting truth from being drowned out by lies. Let’s demand better.
000
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Zuckerberg hints at vague tools, but it’s clear this shift prioritises profits over truth. Fact-checking isn’t perfect, but it’s vital for combating online harms. Regulation must step in to ensure Big Tech fulfils its responsibilities.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 The solution? Regulation. Governments must enforce: - Transparency in content policies. - Penalties for platforms that fail to tackle harmful content. - Consistency in global content standards to avoid loopholes.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Without robust fact-checking, the spread of fake news and hate speech becomes harder to control. Advocacy groups should call for greater oversight, third-party moderation, and transparency to fill the void left by Meta’s withdrawal.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Zuckerberg admits this change means “catching less bad stuff.” That’s not a trade-off; it’s a retreat. Weakening moderation allows harmful content to thrive, silencing marginalised voices and undermining public trust.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 In contrast, regions like the EU and UK are doubling down on holding platforms accountable. The Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Online Safety Bill require proactive measures against online harms. Meta’s US-only shift avoids such accountability.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Meta claims the move aligns with free expression, but content moderation ≠ censorship. Free speech protects individuals from government interference, not a platform’s responsibility to prevent harm. Regulations globally recognise this distinction.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 The stakes are high. We need to warn of a potential surge in harmful content - from election conspiracies to public health misinformation. Civil society groups emphasise that platforms like Meta are essential in mitigating such risks.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Meta’s decision to shift focus to “user evaluation” mirrors Elon Musk’s X-style “community notes.” While appealing in theory, such systems risk being co-opted by bad actors, amplifying bias and disinformation rather than reducing it.
110
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 Fact-checking plays a crucial role in limiting the spread of fake content. Suspending these efforts while misinformation runs rampant is “irresponsible.” This isn’t empowerment - it’s abandonment of responsibility.
100
Sinan Aşçı @sinanasci.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
👉🏻 “Minimal impact”? We can argue Meta’s internal decision was flawed and designed to justify some needs. Public trust in the platform’s ability to manage misinformation is now under fire, especially with looming elections and public health concerns.

#Meta has suspended its #factchecking operations, citing “minimal impact” and the need to empower users. But is this a step towards #freeexpression, or an open door for #misinformation? Let’s unpack it. edition.cnn.com/2025/01/07/t...
