I really loved the band too, his grandson’s band had a great jammy sensibility, and this convinced me every band in the world needs a dedicated vibraphone player

by total chance, almost exactly 15 years since my first Goodreads review for it

I’m trying to be more impulsive about my book choices, and not feeling like I’m just finishing obligations that seemed like a good idea years ago. Naturally this led to me starting four translations of the Tao Te Ching side-by-side

I’ll concede not getting to charge and use earbuds is an issue (a solvable one), but all the woe over making your existing AUX cable 3in longer with a perfect DAC for $9 (or just buying cheap gas station USB-C earbuds) is so persistent for how little it actually changes

I really don't get the repeated folk wisdom that losing headphone jacks is the reason people play videos out loud in public now. Would someone who already doesn't care about strangers take the time to untangle this on every train ride?

I missed that John Crowley died earlier this month. Incredible writer, I knew in the opening chapters of Little Big that it would be a high I’d chase for forever. One of the best at having “I never knew anyone else had that thought” moments on every other page

Other ones that powed me in the moment were The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Le Guin’s Tehanu, and unexpectedly Shusaku Endo’s Silence (even though I was stone cold in the movie). But even to list these I had to scroll through 15 years of Goodreads history…

Definitely a delayed intellectual reaction you described. Best answer I have is Ted Chiang’s Story of Your Life. The afterword on A Scanner Darkly works on me every time. Recently, it’s unexpectedly sweet moments that move me more than tragedies (the opening chapters of Enchanted April got me)

I'm glad I read A Princess of Mars purely so I could learn the saga of "Normal Bean"

He still hoped to find business success, and thought the tale to be indicative of a childish nature, and so outlandish that potential business contacts would think him ungrounded if they discovered what he was working on. At this point he had already decided to adopt the pen name of "Normal Bean", an attempt to suggest that despite the incredible nature of his story, he was still a sane, reliable character.

For the publication of the serial, Burroughs used the pen name "Normal Bean", which he selected as a pun to stress that he was in his right mind, as he feared ridicule for writing such a fantastic story. The effect was spoiled by a typesetter who interpreted "Normal" as a typographical error and changed it to "Norman".[12]

Original publication, titled “Under the Moons of Mars by Norman Bean”

Wow… gatekept… Contemporary live albums are inexplicable with their selections sometimes (though to be fair I guess fans have extra decades to find the gems). This happens with the Dead, Europe 72 doesn’t have any of my favorite versions from that tour, but it’s deeply canonized by its availability

I love entire albums of bonus tracks, they usually come out interesting for the exact reasons they didn't fit on the main albums. I love Dusty in Memphis getting 13 bonus tracks of finished unreleased songs (2 more than the original album?). Also every 80s Prince album of course.

The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow not ending on Walking Through My Dreams is tragic. Half of late 60s UK rock could work here, I never understood the market reasons to not put singles on the album. (The UK LP of Procol Harum's debut not having Whiter Shade of Pale... c'mon)
