I’m trying to be more impulsive about my book choices, and not feeling like I’m just finishing obligations that seemed like a good idea years ago. Naturally this led to me starting four translations of the Tao Te Ching side-by-side

definitely a thing in music too, the youths are learning about the quarter-century old Pitchfork reviews to get mad at like it means anything about anyone now

I really don't get the repeated folk wisdom that losing headphone jacks is the reason people play videos out loud in public now. Would someone who already doesn't care about strangers take the time to untangle this on every train ride?

I'm glad I read A Princess of Mars purely so I could learn the saga of "Normal Bean"

He still hoped to find business success, and thought the tale to be indicative of a childish nature, and so outlandish that potential business contacts would think him ungrounded if they discovered what he was working on. At this point he had already decided to adopt the pen name of "Normal Bean", an attempt to suggest that despite the incredible nature of his story, he was still a sane, reliable character.

For the publication of the serial, Burroughs used the pen name "Normal Bean", which he selected as a pun to stress that he was in his right mind, as he feared ridicule for writing such a fantastic story. The effect was spoiled by a typesetter who interpreted "Normal" as a typographical error and changed it to "Norman".[12]

Original publication, titled “Under the Moons of Mars by Norman Bean”

Frank Herbert making a quick aside in Heretics of Dune to reflect on restaurant gatekeeping

Quote from Frank Herbert — Heretics of Dune:

“Teg entered and saw immediately what he had found. They were to be seen at many places in the Old Empire: eating establishments harking back to ancient times, eschewing automata from kitchen to table. Most of them were “in” establishments. You told friends about your latest “discovery” with an admonishment for them not to spread the word.

“Don’t want to spoil it with crowding.”

This idea had always amused Teg. You spread the word about such places but you did it under the guise of keeping a secret.”
