Having mandatory abstracts in scientific papers took some decades until it was established across disciplines — in linguistics, phonetics or speech science. Pat Kuhl noted in 2004 that while language acquisition is “child’s play”, artificial intelligence fails at the task. I think this is still true despite all the fuzz. Feeding a machine 100s of lifetimes worth of input in order to (barely) learn what a kid does in 6–7 is actually not that impressive.
