every time a new plan/policy/reform is launched, it should be obligatory to begin with an extremely detailed explanation of why all previous visions and plans for the exact same thing remain unimplemented

It was set up with war surplus funds to give ordinary people access to the country. Bought loads of land and set up at least three youth hostels. Downgraded by the Tories and redirected to buying stately homes and their furniture. I am perpetually outraged by this

This is not misinformation. That's what I normally cover - something out of context, an opinion quoted as fact, or a deliberate misinterpretation... This is none of those. This is full-on disinformation. Because that is NOT from the Express. It is entirely fake😱 🧵 1/10
Lembit Opik tweet:

Burnham's big migration plan: take 4,000 stranded migrants from Ceuta, bring them to the UK and put them up in luxury hotels. Americans look at Europe in despair.

Express Headline: Burnham's migrant, Campbell, 1,000 stranded in Ceuta to be brought to UK. The Prime Minister proposes flying thousands of stranded migrants from Spanish enclave to Britain and housing them in London hotels.

And if you’d decided NOT to buy the ticket, you’d have received five emails asking you if you were still going, whether you’d forgotten to press buy, etc.

Or you could say that consumers’ revealed preferences at the moment of purchase turn out to be consistently different from (and un-influenced by) their revealed preferences at the moment of use: and only the former actually matter to airlines’ profits.

This is a key test for me too. If this disgraceful decision is not overturned for Afghans and the other nationalities singled out (quietly if they like, but overturned) then it will be clear Burnham is as amoral and craven as the last lot.

I’ve always thought of national policies as having the same status as the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Detailed priestly prescriptions for how to control something that doesn’t happen and, even if it does, can’t be controlled.

I'd go further: if we native English speakers expect English to be the lingua franca (ha!) of most of the world, everyone who uses it gets to influence how it evolves. Phrases that aren't standard English, like "quite some" and "allows to", are then no longer really "wrong" at all.

@emmet.quiddity.ie Views on this paper? Maybe I too am just a Luddite, but I’m struggling to convince myself that all this guff about AI computation and manufactured quantities amounts to any kind of advance on what decent qual/discourse analysis has been doing for donkey’s years.

I’ll be happy to see a sponsorship scheme in place. I’m not happy to see a Home Secretary who just crowed about denying Afghans and others the chance to study here using one to cling to her position. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I suspect this in part traces back to a widespread and ill-considered attempt by agencies to sell qualitative methods as revealing “motivations”. Eg the “quant tells you what but qual tells you” bullshit that I’ve seen too often.
