GDP per capita has doubled in all three Baltic states since 2000. Incomes have not just doubled in terms of GDP per capita; median incomes have also doubled. Poverty rates are lower, and life satisfaction is higher. Data insight for @ourworldindata.org

Welk boek (fictie of non-fictie) zou elke middelbare scholier moeten lezen?

New article for @ourworldindata.org with @hannahritchie.bsky.social: American foreign aid saved millions of lives each year. For decades, some of these programs had bipartisan support. Cutting them will cost lives. Drawing on research from @charlesjkenny.bsky.social, Justin Sandefur and others.

(2) Charitable giving Direct transfers to poor households are effective. One example is @GiveDirectly: for every $10 donated, $8 goes straight to families in need. Evidence shows this improves health, education and incomes. (5/7)

(1) Foreign aid In 1981, the major donor countries made a promise at the UN: at least 0.15% of their national income would go to the world's least-developed countries. But only three countries met the target in 2022: Luxembourg, Sweden, and Norway. (4/7)

New for @ourworldindata.org: Global inequality is huge — but so is the potential for people in rich countries to make a difference. Less than 2% of the income of the richest 10% would match the *entire* annual income of the poorest 10%. (1/7)

This part should all have cycle highways connecting cities. Then we can have another cycling highway from London to Birmingham to Manchester, and we could call it something like HS2.

Money sent home by international migrants is almost three times as much as global foreign aid. Most of the money sent home by migrants goes from high-income to middle-income countries, but low-income countries also rely on them relative to their GDP.

If you ask me, it’s nonsense that we let companies like Klarna profit off vulnerable people by seducing them into buying things they can’t afford. It seems obvious schemes like this will lead to debt problems whose costs taxpayers (not Klarna) will bear.

House prices surged in the late 20th century mainly because land became much more expensive. In advanced economies, about 80% of the rise in real house prices during this time was driven by higher land values. Source: www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=...

Internet use became the norm for humanity only very recently. When I was born in 1997, only 2% of the world's population used the Internet. By 2019, that number had risen to over 50%; today, two-thirds of the global population is online.

It's crazy that the average UK house price is double the construction cost. But equally puzzling: construction costs in the Netherlands are twice the UK's. What explains this: labour, materials, sustainability requirements, or something else entirely? Does it translate to more m2 or higher quality?
