This is a surprisingly big lead for rejoin - if it survived a referendum campaign, the outcome would be 66-34. Not even close.

The UK is the EU’s biggest trading concern outside of itself. Rejoining is win-win. The lack of goodwill to do so is vastly oversold.

September 19th is Autumn Day! Or at least, it should be: on this day in 1819 Keats wrote his great poem “To Autumn”. So: happy Ode To Autumn day for all who celebrate. www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44484/...

To Autumn
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find Thee sitting careless on a granary floor, Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing winnowing Separating the wheat…

Well their deal won’t be negotiated by Boris Johnson to an absurd self-imposed deadline during a pandemic, so yeah, probably.

Please remember everyone not to look directly at Nigel Farage as his career is eclipsed. If necessary look at him via the bottom of a bin.

Elon Musk says money won’t matter by 2036. Can he possibly be right?
If this wild prediction came true, it would make his own companies virtually worthless

Scrapping net zero is Bond villain behaviour. It really is. “I will continue to pump out carbon dioxide, Mr Bond, and the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, the current that sustains England’s green and pleasant land, will collapse! Mwahahahaha!”

This. For better or worse, the UK has been governed most often from the centre right, and now that position is being scrubbed from the spectrum.

Well that from Andy Burnham sounded rather promisingly as if we will finally be taking all the empty champagne bottles of Thatcherism to the tip instead of trying to refill them with the blood and sweat of the workers. Or something. He sounded socialist and it’s catching.

Fair play to him for that; nonetheless he completely misjudged today. It did the cause no favours.

Thing is, if the people of Clacton ended up with Count Binface as their MP instead of a man who has yet to hold a single surgery in the constituency, it would objectively be an improvement.

Hardly surprising when (Cameron aside) they’ve each been charged with squaring the circle of Brexit. Previous PMs have faced challenges but none were judged on an ability to do the impossible.

Disclosure Day: a good but flawed film from a director of genius with some great acting in it, not least from Emily Blunt. Top marks too for the comedy realism of a scene in which a couple try and fail to destroy a phone.

Something very dispiriting about the lazy assumption that a people in a place that voted a certain way 10 years ago would be incapable of reacting to new information (and of course plenty of the original voters are now in the great polling booth in the sky).

I don’t care if Starmer goes. I don’t care if Starmer stays. I just want everybody across the political spectrum with an interest in stopping Farage from becoming Prime Minister to put their heads together and find a way to meet that crucial objective. I think you’d call it putting country first.

What Labour should be thinking right now: “Huh; maybe spending 16 months endorsing Farage’s policies while horrifying and alienating the base was a bad idea…” What Labour WILL be thinking right now: “Hmm. The racists still don’t like us. We’re obviously not being racist ENOUGH. BE MORE RACIST.”

Brexit happens. Brexit dials up absolutely everything that made Brexit voters angry, then dials it up some more. Where do they go to stop this? To Mr more Brexit please, Mr Brexit himself, Nigel Farage. It’s the sick voting for the disease.

People think Darwinism is “the survival of the fittest.” Sure, but W H Auden wrote a better definition for a social species like ours: “we must love one another or die.” It’s from this poem, which seems all too relevant right now. poets.org/poem/septemb...

The Epstein files show that Brexit was never a “plucky British revolt”. In reality, Brexit was fed, and empowered, by an entire class of oligarchs and autocrats, who thrive on chaos, weak regulation and brittle institutions.

Yes, Epstein, but Starmer’s biggest political missteps and fate-sealers were some time ago: the winter fuel allowance, and alienating swathes of the people who elected him to to woo voters who’ll think he’s a raging communist whatever he does.
