Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 13/01/2026Until Max left us last autumn i would have said Shut up and take my money. Mind you, I did have a small Cave Canum sign in rhe hall 010

The final lines are in Claudia’s own hand 26013
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 26/05/2025Magna Roman fort excavations on Hadrian's Wall, part of the @vindolandatrust.bsky.social and where i'll be excavating the next two weeks. #archaeology #Roman #Hadrianswall 171

Over the next few years this area will be explored including this years excavation within the fort. The walls show constant rebuilding since their construction in AD214 but 8 other forts lie beneath since the founding of the site in cAD85. 0414
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 03/05/2025The reconstruction is an incredible piece of work in itself. Who knows what might turn up this year or at Magna as we get into som nice anaerobic fort ditches 010

Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 17/02/2025Well that was a headline i never expected to see. Had to check the date wasn't April 1st. 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 11/02/2025That's the problem, we have a GE here in Norway this autumn and i'd love to vote green, but as it stands they're more red with a light green wash applied on top. There's no good answer, but at least PR here gives them a better chance. I also have voting rights in the uk still. 020
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 11/02/2025I would vote green if they put the needs and well being of the planet and all living things before those of a single species. But very few people would go along with that voluntarily, and so here we are. 100

Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 21/01/2025Cracking program, thoroughly enjoyed it, the thrill of discovery never gets old does it. Only another 4 months until i dust off my trowel and go searching for Romans again. 120
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 16/01/2025I wonder what treasures and surprises will turn up this year, from both Vindo and Magna. 010

Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 04/01/2025There's nothing positive about that photo, it's a lifeless glass and metal desert 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 03/01/2025I'm fortunate enough to be in a position that allows me the time and money to volunteer on archaeological projects. I'm very well aware how poorly paid archaeology is so am more than happy to pay if it helps fund a project. 010
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 28/12/2024Meat drones to soak up Ukrainian resources. And it works for them, no need for fancy expensive tech. 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 19/12/2024Quantity, it's all about quantity. Start addressing the cause, not just the symptoms. 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 09/12/2024I have spondylolisthesis, standing still or moving slowly means lower back pain and stiffness after an hour, but needs must. A good museum for me includes places I can sit to stretch out the muscles 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 22/11/2024And for those that may not have heard. Magna started turning up shoes this year as well. Given where the excavations are heading next year, i'd say watch this space! 000

Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 18/11/2024I would hope and it would be interesting to know if the film prompts an uptick in searches for words like Geta, Caracalla, Macrinus and Jugurtha 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Saw it yesterday, ok so we all knew they mangled emperor timelines and yes, sharks, rhinos were just silly, however i did have to smile at some of the small details. Spotted a Lucius Verus bust, some correct armour for early 3rd C, inspiration from Caligula, a Numidian kings name. Nerdy easter eggs 110
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 17/11/2024The #Vindolanda 5k+ shoes are well known, but this year the trust's other site, Magna, 2 years in to a 5 year project, started to produce shoes as well. Next year will, i'm sure, produce more as the focus will be on lovely anaerobic fort ditches 000
Simon Orchard @simonorch.bsky.social · 16/11/2024If it's available at the Vindo museum bookshop, I'll pick up a copy when I return to the excavations again next year. 110
