ALL THE MEN WE’VE NEVER SLEPT WITH - my adult debut - written with Sarah Counsell! A gay man, a straight woman, and their dating disasters as they try to find love before their school reunion. Out next July from Zaffre Books - fun, funny, slightly bonkers. Hope you love it. 💛

Honestly, Louie, I’m on a ‘burn publishing to the ground’ rampage this weekend - for all the reasons you can well guess - and I think I just need to lock my phone away for 48 hours at this point. 😐

My god, they’re still producing the same ignorant, bigoted, hysterical articles they were doing in the 80s. Pathetic.

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Absolutely, I agree, and that takes us back to the core problem here, as far as I’m concerned, which is a failure to centre the actual kids.

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Exactly! Booktrust have the expertise (and logistical know-how) to deliver choice to kids at scale. They should have been involved with this.

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Yes, yes you are absolutely right. This horrible idea of what constitutes ‘good’ or ‘quality’ literature - which is just a euphemism for books adults love and kids generally hate. I’m so over this bullshit.

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Oh, absolutely! Spaffing the entire marketing budget because they’re so desperate to make it the next Potter, and so removed from reality they don’t realise the average kid doesn’t want that type / format of book any more.

Same.

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
I agree with you, Caroline. And until we focus on what the actual kids want, like and need, rather than what adults in the bubble of publishing think they want, we’ll never solve the reaching for pleasure / literacy issue.

Totally. And when individuals - who are clearly clueless - get to decide if something is ‘inappropriate’ (and a safeguarding concern!) we have a major problem. Like you, I’m speechless.

They’ve named the school. A shameful episode - deciding to remove any books at all; the lazy use of AI; the appalling treatment of the librarian; the head’s arrogance and ignorance in deeming certain titles ‘inappropriate’; and the idea that books in a library could be a safeguarding concern…

And I found the latter to be utterly useless when it happened to me in 2022. Just … hands in the air, ‘Well, what can we do?’ sort of attitude. I suspect this is partly (entirely?) due to the faith school issue - because protecting, e.g LGBT titles… /2

Simon James Green @simonjamesgreen.bsky.social · 23/03/2026
Yes, this is exactly the problem - no formal process; left at the discretion of individual schools which then means it’s they who become specific targets if certain people don’t like a book, conveniently absolving the government and DfE of any direct responsibility. /1

So awful. This is the section which breaks my heart: “We have the exact same group of children who come in every single day, and a lot of them are LGBTQ+, a lot of them are neurodivergent, and they come into the library because it’s their safe place,” Emily said. That safe place had been removed."

That’s the bit I can’t get my head around - and it feels to me like an abuse of the system meant to safeguard kids from actual abuse.
