Bird/ #cowflu #H5N1 is a single mutation away from possible human to human transmission. The more dairy workers get infected, the higher the selective pressure for this mutation to occur. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

A switch from avian- to human-type receptor specificity is considered a major risk factor for transmission in humans (33, 35, 64). For this reason, our observation that the single Texas H5 HA Gln226Leu mutation can switch receptor specificity is a clear concern. The bovine airway and mammary gland epithelium have predominantly avian-type and, to a lesser extent, human-type receptors (65, 66), which provide little selective pressure for acquiring human-type receptor specificity. However, H5N1 infection of dairy workers, who have human-type receptors (34), provide selective pressure for human-type receptor specificity. Furthermore, in the flu season, coinfection with seasonal influenza viruses could lead to reassortment of bovine and human viruses and the creation of a hybrid virus that is more adapted for human infection.

Addendum: I'm of course massively vaccinated, I'v gotten 6 vax so far, 2 of them BA.4/5 bivalent. And will get the monovalent soon – if the data support it & I find a willing doctor to vaccinate off-label I might get a 2nd monovalent. But I realize vaccines are only one layer. I also wear a FFP3.

I am very, very pro-vaxx, but also pro data. The bivalent boostersdid not dramatically reduce the chances of getting Covid. With the bivalent boosters, the peak of protection of infection was 30%, and then waned quickly. Probably bc. of the current variant soup. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Study on prevention of infection:

The first large study of prevention of infection for a mucosal Covid vaccine that I’ve seen is underway in China. It’s an exploratory trial, without a comparison group, for 4,000 people who are at particular risk of infection (including hospital staff in close contact with patients with Covid). The participants must have been previously vaccinated, and they will get 2 doses of a nasal spray, 28 days apart. The register entry mentions monitoring negative Covid tests.
