Earliest I've found in Radio Times is as the number for a phone-in part of 'Midweek' with Ludovic Kennedy, and that's on 30 January 1973. The programme's phone-in segment pre-dated that by at least a couple of months but I can't see an earlier number in RT, though it may have been given out on air.

I'm not convinced this was a positive step, and I'm not at all sure it was really any business of the ITA forcing this upon the companies. It's mildly interesting that the advertisement refers to the new magazine as 'TV Times' whereas from the beginning, in the mag itself, it was always 'TVTimes'.

I can't criticise: it was only because this afternoon I was talking to someone about it that I discovered that it had made it that far.

I can only look at Canadian newspapers, not listings magazines, but I haven't found anything there. There is one British ante-dated reference, though. In 1962, the Norwich Evening News reports that in an episode of "Dial Rix", "they take a sideways look at certain television advertising magazines."

On radio, "You and Yours" uses it for a short while in 1972 but I can't find it on TV listings until Jimmy Tarbuck "takes a sideways look at London" in his 1974 ATV series. It's finally front and centre when it's used as the title of a 1977 BBC radio series presented by Anthony Smith.

I wonder where it originated. In UK broadcast listings, "Braden's Week" seems to be the first to use it, in late 1968. It's quickly adopted for a segment of BBC radio's "Home This Afternoon" but for television listings no-one else seems to touch it while Bernie's still going.

"As revealed by the company’s store locator, a listing has popped up for ‘Retro Birmingham’ on 89-90 Bull Street". It's not on there now, just shows the site as 'Birmingham'. 89-90 Bull Street is the address in the city at which CeX have been trading for the last 12+ years.

I'm not sure they were laughing at that but they were mocked. My own mockery came from the ludicrous situation of them being unskippable on legitimately-bought DVDs but nowhere to be seen on the pirate downloads the ads were warning about. Penalise the good guys, that's bound to generate goodwill.

Certainly non-traditional if the plans are correct: there seems to be no way in or out of Bedrooms 1 and 2, except to and from their ensuites (and a dressing room, in the case of #1).

I should add that this isn't just a biographical note. In the one episode I've seen of the series, Goodall spends some time in the flat at the start of the episode, including working at a desk in it, before his investigations take him out and about.

He may perhaps have used a hotel from time to time, if his work took him some distance from where he lived, but his home base was a "richly, heftily furnished Eastbourne flat" according to TVTimes.

But do they mean poor reception on the part of the viewers or on the part of the reviewers? I can well imagine that many of those responsible for reviewing television programmes for the newspapers would have been among the first to get colour television, so it may have affected their opinions.

The fact that Rex didn't mention it did make me wonder if Brian was misremembering and I did challenge him on it when I was editing his book. But I couldn't shake him on that particular fact, so we left it in although Brian hadn't remembered Bond's involvement but he added that following my query.

Ah, yes, I can well understand why he would be familiar with it. Tinker Tailor is also mentioned briefly in Brian Tesler's autobiography. The only thing it adds, so far as I can see, is the suggestion that Le Carre had a go at adapting it himself first, before Julian Bond attempted it.

It's bizarre that Jones Clocks don't do the happy face thing on their analogue clocks but do set the right time on their Visor LED Alarm Clock packaging, even though those displays are digital.
A variety of clocks, digital and analogue, in a Tesco Extra. None of the clocks are in operation. The four analogue faces are set to 12:00, 3:09, 11:58 and 12:00. On the boxes containing an alarm clock with a digital display, a picture shows the clock with the time 13:52.

The only radio Paul Temple that's missing, so far as I can see, is Paul Temple and the Front Page Men. I think all the other serials and plays are there including both serial and single versions of Send and News, and both Send Again and its remake Alex.

The phrasing is a little misleading, maybe. The play is given a cover feature but it's a more generic photo, unrelated to the scene he describes.

If I search for your name I get similar info, but slightly different phrasing. One phrase is "Live in south London with hubby and trans teen daughter." If I search for that in Google it brings up a shed load of BlueSky hits, all different people plus same refs to sci-fi + genealogy. Weird. Worrying.
