So the unblinking eye that never sleeps is the perfect symbol of power for the current US president? Are we entirely sure of that?

How well can you model the evolution of complex social traits in a Bayesian model? (Not meant as a snarky question, I really do wonder.) There's hardly a "prone to a single lifestyle but open to a steady relationship if the right indivdual comes along" gene, I suppose. So what is being modeled?
Screenshot of part of the abstract of the study linked in the 1. posting, reading "We found empirical data for 726 species across 1,473 populations: 353 populations were primarily solitary, 250 populations pair living, and 870 populations group living. Notably, 367 species (51%) and 583 populations (40%) exhibited intraspecific variation in social organization. Using a Bayesian phylogenetic framework that incorporates intraspecific variation, we show that the ancestral placental mammal was mainly but not exclusively solitary, displaying intraspecific variation. Pair living was estimated to account for approximately 26% of ancestral social organization."

So I'm in an Irish pub reading about how apparently the Irish had to rely on people from the bigger island next door in order to learn (proto-)Gaelic. Now isn't that just typical? I'll have another glass of Irish cider to drink to that. The book is"Proto" by @laurainparis.bsky.social, by the way.

Someone should write a book about how Proto-Indo-European welled up and flooded Eurasia and beyond. (That book exists actually, I happened across it at Berlin airport by sheer coincidence, bought it with much skepticism and have been reading it constantly for two days now. Unexpectedly non-boring!)

Screenshot aus dem verlinkten Wikipedia-Artikel, Text: "Although it is widely believed that the charges were related to Wilde's consensual activities, The Trials of Oscar Wilde, which includes an original transcript of the libel trial (which came to light in 2000), suggests that he took advantage of teenagers.[172] Antony Edmonds feels that Wilde would have faced prosecution today: "For example, he certainly paid for sex with youths under the age of 18 which is a criminal offence. But even if his activities had led only to exposure and not to arrest, he would have been savagely pilloried in the media. Wilde was 39 when he seduced Alphonse Conway, and Conway was an inexperienced boy of 16". Another teenager who said he had engaged in sex acts with Wilde, Walter Grainger, who was 16 at the time, said Wilde had threatened him with "very serious trouble" if he told anyone about their relationship."

The conclusion that it was a bear and not a cat that did the mauling seems a bit speculative at this point?
Screenshot from the article linked to in post before, reading "Although similar injuries are reported in the case
of tiger and leopard attacks, in these cases there
is a greater emphasis on neck transfixing inju-
ries rather than cranial and thoracic trauma (e.g.
Hejna 2010; Pathak et al. 2013; Bhandari et al.
2019; Agarwal et al. 2021). This makes the gen-
eral pattern of trauma in Arene Candide 1 more
compatible with a bear attack. However, given
that different carnivores can result in similar pat-
terns of trauma, especially when examining dry
bone (Arilla et al. 2014; Sala and Arsuaga 2018),
it is currently difficult to further reconstruct the
circumstances around the death of the young
Principe beyond a “large carnivore attack, prob-
ably a bear”"

Some Neanderthals were eaten by others in Belgium more than 40kya. This study says: 4 petite women, a child and a baby, not from far away, not well exercised. Fine. Then it claims they were hunted for being weak small couch potatoes. Bit speculative that, isn't it? www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Screenshot with quote from study linked to in post: "In this context, we can hypothesise that the Neandertal individuals from Goyet that were anthropogenically processed not only indicate exocannibalistic practices, but they also testify to a targeted predatory behaviour toward gracile, short-statured female individuals, and possibly immature individuals along them.".

This article puts it much better and with what I suppose is actual insight into this phenomenon. www.garbageday.email/p/charlie-ki...
Quote from linked article "We have let school shootings in America persist long enough that we have created a culture where kids grow up seeing them as a path towards fame and glory. Another consequence of how thoroughly the internet has flattened pop culture, politics, and real life violence. All of it now is just another meme you can participate in to go viral. Made even more confusing by a new nihilistic accelerationist movement that delights in muddying the waters for older people who still adhere to a traditional political spectrum. Many young extremists now believe in a much simpler binary: Order and chaos. And if you are spending any time at all trying to derive meaning from violent acts like this then you are, by definition, their enemy. "

I suppose "Fahrfunft" would be the pronounciation if you fell off that contraption and landed on your jaw. Lower case "s" and "f" are very hard to keep apart in Frakturschrift: one has a dash just meeting the vertical line, the other is crossed by it. Lower case "k" has still other protrusions.

That's true even if the servers are situated over here but controlled by a US entity. It's a daunting task, like the Ukrainian army having to manage without Starlink. But what's the alternative? Calm is good on the high seas. But if your ship has hit an iceberg, you better prepare for the worst.
screenshot from NYTimes piece quoted above: "Linas Kojala, director of the Geopolitics and Security Studies Center in Vilnius, Lithuania, urges calm, because “there is no real alternative to the U.S. security guarantee” for a long time to come. “Declaring the trans-Atlantic relationship has collapsed would be like stepping off a ship in the middle of the ocean with no other vessel in sight.”"
