I heard a GOP talking head boast about the Trump stock market. Here is the data: Using the S&P 500 as the metric, the market grew by 15.66% in 2025. That sounds pretty good, but in 2023 the growth was 26.29%, and in 2024 it was 21.83%.

In 2028 half the population will be weary of Trump's excesses, and the other half will be concerned that a Dem president may do unto MAGA what MAGA has done to Dems. A winning strategy will champion reining in presidential power. Here are 5 issues that will galvanize broad support. The 6th will not.

Proposed constitutional amendments:

1. Constitutional amendment overturning TRUMP v. UNITED STATES (establishing broad presidential immunity), perhaps placing in its stead reasoning consistent with Justice Barrett’s opinion (labeled as concurring, but actually a dissent).

2. Constitutional amendment requiring states to use nonpartisan redistricting commissions, each member of which must be accepted by both of the two most populous political parties in the state. This amendment would not require states to undo past gerrymandering, as that would never pass Congress.

3. Constitutional amendment allowing Congress to place limits on political donations.

4. Constitutional amendment allowing Congress to make certain agency appointments substantially immune from presidential interference.

5. Constitutional amendment prohibiting the president from accepting gifts of anything more than nominal value (say $100), whether said gifts are intended to directly benefit the president or any public project favored by the president (such as, presidential library, remodeling the White House, etc.).

6. Constitutional amendment making clear that the states and Congress have the authority to enact statutes prohibiting the sale of automatic or semiautomatic firearms.

The rich do pay a slightly higher percentage of income tax. But, when you factor in sales tax and property tax, they pay a lower percentage. There has been an unprecedented concentration of wealth at the top. Progressive taxation should be more aggressive.
