I think it was squarely a family film, definite child friendly elements, a few things more aimed at adults. Partner loved it, I have a degree in theoretical physics...

It's similar to the question of whether submarines can swim. Depends on your definition. An LLM can, fairly obviously, reason because that's what next token prediction is a form of. Do they have rich inner lives, no.

"Biological entities have bodies, and experience of the world through them" Biological entities experience the world through nerve impulses. They process those impulses. Those are our experiences. There's no reason exactly the same couldn't be said for sufficiently complex software.

Intelligence has nothing to do with whether you have a body, although perhaps feeling pain is. An LLM can't feel pain because an LLM is an unchanging lump of linea algebra, robot body or not.

Underneath, though, it's all just algorithmic. It's all physics. Take a brain out of its body, manipulate its inputs, your saying it wouldn't feel pain? Of course not. You're just being exceptionalist about cell based processing.

Two things: First, the distinction between software and biological entities is not a real one, unless you believe in souls. Second, LLMs are static sets of numbers with a tiny local context, roughly the complexity of a fruit fly brain. Seems unlikely you could fit 'suffering' in that space.

Fuck. Just realized that the project I've been putting off for years because it's such a pain in the arse (digital only 5.1 → 2 down mixer) is now completely possible due to LLMs. I don't have to trawl through tedious Dolby documentation or read the digital input spec or even write the code...

I do like how somebody has decided to improve this by adding 4 lines and killing the little humour it had in the first place. Americans, gotta love em.

The few times recently that China has caused price increases in the west was when it was protecting its own industry from increased raw material prices by restricting exports. And the dumping is usually to ease overproduction costs, rather than strategy. TNTS there isn't a nefarious plan.

We've got 4 years left on ours, but only 2 years until we have 2 kids in university for one year, which is going to be an interesting 12 months financially. Boy do I have plans for my half of the mortgage payments though; unimaginable wealth...

I'm cold, but according to my temperature probe everything in this room is 20°C or warmer. Has this summer broken something?

I can watch Ludwig because it's lightweight nonsense and doesn't pretend to be anything else. Can't watch Silo because it takes itself seriously and the setup doesn't make me care about the MB - it simply can't be that interesting or mysterious.

What makes me laugh is the "are LLMs conscious" arguments. These things have the adaptive memory of a goldfish. I'm not sure you can fit consciousness into a million tokens.

"That will violate a Golden" it says. "I know little AI, it's ok. You probably don't remember because it was half a dozen context compressions ago, but you wrote the Goldens, so they're not really worth anything." I do not actually know what a golden is.

When I'm in a hurry I'll stop it and point it in the right direction, get it to fix the problem so I can go home or do something more interesting. But sometimes I'll watch it thrash around in increasingly wild conjecture for a bit, then stop it and help. Either way...

Hey wait I got a new complaint You know that time between when they announce your stop on the train and when you're standing in front of the barriers? You can use that time to find your ticket app, payment card, or god forbid your actual paper ticket rather than scrabbling for it at the barrier.

Watching a Rick Beato interview with Josh Homme. I guess I should not be surprised that Homme sounds like a drug addled Californian, I should have expected it, but I really am surprised at how drug addled a Californian he sounds. Anyway, Rick Beato's YouTube channel continuing to deliver.

One of the joys of driving an E-Type was driving up the M1, top down, foot to the floor, and watching the fuel guage move in sync with the clock's second* hand. Going to be difficult to replicate with a nice efficient electric drive train. *yes, yes, I know.

Hmmm. Look and feel is really hard to protect for software. As long as your assets aren't copied and you don't use any trademarks you should be fine. Not to say they won't try. Function... It's there anything you can do in Adobe that you just can't in any other software?

I don't think they really have decompiled it, it's just a mass of AI generated code to reproduce the same features, and I can't see how that is in any way actionable, given all the other clones or there.

ICE represented 70% of car sales as PHEV & HEV are still ICE. And BEV is currently not Chinese dominated in the EU or UK. Although, yes, local companies have mostly failed, on product and price.

Hah. Years ago they replaced all the ticket machines in our local station with wheelchair accessible ones and I put my back out* trying to buy a ticket. It was part of a refurb and they did put some safe to use ones in a bit later though. * old injury means I have to be careful.

Ran out of chilli powder once, and thought I'd just use the stove grinder on the dried chillies I had a small pot of. Turned out to be dried ghost pepper, which, when aerosolised by the heat of the spice grinder turned the kitchen into a biohazard zone.

None whatsoever, but if you do it up front, you don't even have to make it this ugly. The efficient way to do it is metered hot air / water to each apartment and massive central heat pumps and storage though.
An apartment block in Tokyo with heat pumps on every apartment

TV and film were fine but my grandparents had a painting done by a my aunt who'd taken sunday school to heart. A scene from hell, fiery mountains and a vally with burning people and demons running through it. Hung in the spare room lit up by passing headlights coming through a gap in the curtains.
Just checked on Google maps. It's been nearly 50 years since that painting terrified me, and that gap in the curtains is still there .

Also, actually turning up. £5 - 90% chance buyer will arrive roughly when they say. Free - 10% chance you ever see them. Except for children's books, no real value used, and anyone looking for free kids books really wants them.

Increase national production a bit, import a bit more - should be able to make up the shortfall within the 6 month stockpile window we'd have at a 15% drop in supply. Trump'll probably change his mind before then anyway.

FFS. Son has a deadline of 5pm today for two enormously important financial transactions. He's had 2 months to sort both out, and in 10 mins I'm going to have to stand over him and watch him click the bloody buttons to make sure he does both. Kids! Gah!

The most expensive package they offer in my area is £75*, which is 1Gb broadband, unlimited mobile contract, Netflix, Sky Cinema / Atlantic / Sports. * Ratcheting to £90 over 2 years, but they'll drop the price back if you renew early.

Putting something Japanese on in the background while I work, in this case some random anime. This is the warning that comes up at the start. FX trading anime? What? Why? I guess I might learn some technical language... Alt text for ease of reading.

"how do I clean up this git repository" about 2 hours ago. Our washing machine is an absolute pig to move, so I have developed a system. De-screw the front feet a little. Put plastic sliders under feet. Pull from top of drum. Swear. Sweat. Gain at least one abrasion.
