Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 09/04/2025There are a few varieties, and I’m not sure what type these are! I can report back when they grow a bit more. At the moment they only look like baby green onions. 120
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 09/04/2025I haven’t, but when I had ducks they loved the seeds! I may try if they flower. 020
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 08/04/2025I hadn’t heard of the perennial celery either, but had someone reach out to offer it in exchange for my own offer to share divisions! Really excited for more perennial Veg! 030
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Doesn't look like much, but this is gold: Did a plant swap with someone new in a nearby town. Got perennial Korean celery roots, lovage, comfrey, perennial leeks, and garden dock. The food forest is going to be FLOURISHING this year. 3551
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 06/03/2025A sharing version of my garden planning spreadsheet. Been using it for a few years now. It'll spit out planting dates based on your last frost date but you have to input your plants & relative planting times. If it's not on the seed packet, check permapeople.org. 🌱 docs.google.com/spreadsheets...docs.google.comPlanting calendar 050
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Talk to me about sunchokes/jerusalem artichokes. Do you actually eat them? How? Do they make *everyone* fart a lot? 14231
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025You you had a lot of excess biomass to burn in an existing fire, or needed to get rid of, it makes sense. Otherwise, yeah, compost! 000
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025True. I have heavy duty nursery trays that i reuse each year. They work, but I’m curious! 000
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025Sleeping in the garage at the moment! Do you pre-start then indoors? I’m only in zone 5. Planted from sticks last year but they grew a lot and fruited, but no time to ripen. Hoping this year will bring fruits! 100
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025Lots of talk about biochar, but importing/buying it in feels like a stretch. If you’re doing it for carbon sequestration and climate, please consider the externalities! How is that product made? Where is it shipped from? Making biochar is not inherently zero-impact. 280
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025How’s the soil blocker been for you? I’m considering it for this year. Do you find the soil mix fussy? 100
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/02/2025Talk to me about soil blockers. Worth it? I’ve been starting seeds in deep nursery trays, and the roots tend to grow fairly robust, but I’m thinking about a soil blocker this year. What do we say? 🌱 990
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 07/01/2025We here! Check out the permaculture feed, and some starter packs. I’ve got one set up for permaculture peeps on my profile! 110

Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 06/01/2025You are if you can think it! Let me know what you think. 💚 Works well for gardens too, but it’s focused more on plants and flexibility be a grid. 110
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 05/01/2025Just a reminder since it's garden-planning season for those in the northern hemisphere, that Permapeople has a free and non-commercial garden planner. More elaborate than a grid-based planner, and more suited for food foresters and homesteaders, but it's awesome! permapeople.org/plans/newpermapeople.orgNew garden plan | 🌱✌️ PermapeopleCreate a new garden plan with Permapeople 0228
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 31/12/2024It still looks messy but it’s sorted enough. I’ve a great collection of saved seed going—many are 5th generation and meant for this spot. Pest-proof squash is a goal for this year. What’s your favourite moschata? 0131

Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 30/12/2024Elderberry grows prolifically for me. I am hereby an elderberry maximalist—especially for small spaces. We easily fit 6 plants into the existing landscaping along edges. ~8L of watered down elderberry juice in the freezer for cold/flu season (only 5 left). 🌱 open.substack.com/pub/poorprol...open.substack.comRediscovering the American Elderberry: A Journey Through History, Culture, and CultivationThe berry that fed the world 3463

Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/12/2024Looking forward to a full harvest from our patch this year. Started from seed 3 years ago, this next summer will be the 4th, and first big harvest. What's your favourite thing to do with asparagus? Mine's tossed in olive oil and salt/pepper and thrown on the bbq. 120
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 24/12/2024Score! I haven't tasted it yet, but my trees are getting larger... Is this from a mature tree? 110

Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 19/12/2024In speaking with several farmers about this, it’s way beyond just insects. Any harvest in spring in NA is killing at least 1 fawn per acre, countless other small creatures . That’s just the harvest. Industrial fertilizer/herbicide use is a whole other externality that’s readily ignored as well. 020
Sim G @sim.bsky.social · 18/12/2024Totally. I’m wishful thinking that the climate weirding will bring the Carolinian biome closer. I’ll facilitate by planting out persimmons, pawpaws, and spicebush. We already have many of the other great wild edibles here. 010
