Let me tell you a story.

I was streaming Red Dead 2, quite a bit later after its release. About a year.

As I’m playing, a series of people keep coming into my chat and spoiling where the best horse in the game is.

I’m on my Shire horse. I love my Shire horse. But it seems anyone else that comes in and sees me riding it assumes I don’t have my shit together, and they need to take it upon themselves to help me out and tell me where this great best horse is, regardless of my wishes.

The entire time, all I can picture in my mind is a legion of unoriginal, mindless gamers chanting “Must have the best thing always. Must have the best.”

So on stream, I rode my ass up north to where that special, super rare horse was, and I shot that thing in the face in front of 3k viewers.

One of my favourite moments as a streamer.

The last TV show you watched is now getting a crossover with the last videogame you played.

What is the unholy abomination that has just been created?

GEORGE: "I don't know why everyone just stands in Limsa. What's to see? Other people standing in Limsa?"

JERRY: "Well, some people just like the feeling of community."

GEORGE: "'Feeling of community,' now what's that, where does that come from? What about seeing everyone push their discords and twitch streams in chat makes someone feel so loved?"

ELAINE: "What do you care? You don't even talk to anyone, you just do the MSQ."

GEORGE: "I talk!"

JERRY, exasperated: "He talks."

ELAINE: "You talk, do you? When?"

GEORGE shrinks back and averts his gaze.

GEORGE: "When, uhm...when I RP."

ELAINE appears shocked, a surprised grin upon her face. "You RP?"

GEORGE: "So what? People RP, there are whole servers where people RP."

JERRY: "Well it's an ongoing debate."

KRAMER enters suddenly, nearly stumbling into someone exiting the coffee shop as he comes in, cat headphones almost falling off his head before he rights them.

KRAMER: "Jerry, I need—"

JERRY: "Oh no, not this time."

KRAMER, affronted: "You haven't even heard me out yet!"

JERRY: "I don't need to, I'm not running dungeons with you again."

KRAMER: "Well why not?"

JERRY: "Because you don't know how to play Black Mage, Kramer! I'm a tank doubling as DPS when I run dungeons with you!"

KRAMER: "Jerry, Black Mage is a complicated class, I have to hang in the back and do my thing."

JERRY: "Oh, it's 'doing your thing' to send me into everything, do one Flare and then sit on the bleachers?"

KRAMER: "One Flare takes all my mana Jerry, I have to recharge!"

GEORGE: "He does have to recharge."

JERRY: "You're supposed to finish with Flare not start with Flare! This is why I can't play with you."

ELAINE: "Well what's your other DPS doing?"

JERRY: "The other DPS is Newman."

GEORGE and ELAINE nod and mutter their mutual understandings.

One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead.
No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience.
Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul.
